There’s some good work being done ‘upstairs’ which means that we should be seeing nzihl games on regional tv, and a weekly roundup show on Sky and possibly prime, this season. There was a meeting today where sky started to make some commitments. There may also be an internet feed made available of all games.
They’re looking for some significant sponsorship to be able to film all the games. If anyone has ‘ins’ to companies that would be willing to look at 5 figure sponsorship of sports they can contact me and I’ll pass it on. president@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi
Sky also will start showing some of the NHL finals some time in the next couple of weeks.
Some fantastic work being done by Gunther at the NZIHL and a guy Jez who is trying to organise the filming and sponsorship. Be a massive step for nz ice hockey.

I wonder if they’ll have Steve Jackson back for the commentating job. He did a pretty good job last time.

April 24, 2010 at 11:45 pm #15274GasmanMemberI guess I am one sided and would love to see some of own domestic Ice Hockey on small screen. I hope they find someone with deep enough pockets to back this format.
Would love to think by lifting the profile of the sport it might translate into a direct increase in club numbers. I guess it’s the kind of thing that might take time to develop.
Side note any idea on average attendence at NZIHL games last season. 100ish. hoping TV coverage might improve this. Commentators for our national rugby code lament empty stands on tv. It’s not a good look.
I remember as a Kid Otago Nuggets games in the now ice stadium being packed out each and every week. fantastic to get that again. Really we want the IB vs. OZ croud for every game
April 25, 2010 at 1:20 am #15275vpatrolMemberattendance depends on building and teams. Queenstown the Chch had pretty good numbers. Games vs Stampede and Swarm usually had 200-300 in Chch. Thunder games were low as were Admirals from what I saw.
April 25, 2010 at 3:26 am #15276imported_RyanMemberStrange that Auckland would have such low attendances despite such a massive potential audience up there.
May 3, 2010 at 4:14 am #15277plod16MemberHockey is on sky at 5pm, it maybe a repeat of last nights late show. At least some is better than none.
Could always set up a web broadcast of games, at least when you go to the major broadcasters at a later stage, you will have some stats to show them.
Is tv coverage just another urban myth or who has done the work to ensure that this will be done? Might rate up there with a rink in Wellington!!
May 3, 2010 at 5:36 am #15278KyleMemberIt’s come from Gunther, who was at the meeting with Sky. It’s reliant upon the sponsors however, so it’s going no where until they sign up.
May 5, 2010 at 4:16 am #15279KyleMemberAccording to the TV schedule in today’s ODT, NHL on the fly is on Sky Sports tomorrow morning at 1.30am.
NHL on the fly is a 45 minute show wrapping up the day’s play. Has several minutes highlights of each game, plus often a highlight reel of goals and saves. Plus panel discussion and invited guests.
At least that’s what it was like the last time I watched it, which was last season. It’s not a bad show to keep up with the whole league (or the whole playoffs at this time of year I guess).
