Anyone got any run downs on the teams from the new Junior (U16) Elite League and the games to date?

I know Auckland/Canterbury split the first weekend. Canterbury won the first game pretty convincingly, Auckland turned that around completely in the second game.

Anyone see Auckland/Southern over the weekend in Auckland?

Canterbury is down in Gore two weeks from now against Southern.

Um I saw the game on Saturday, where Southern went down 6-3?? (I think) to Auckland.
Was strange because Southern looked in control the whole time I watched, (we were doing warmups and what not during their game)

For the Dominance that southern had they were only 1-0 up going into 3rd. Auckland Scored two goals to go up 2-1, then southern scored 2 to go 3-2.
Then Auckland scored a bunch to finish up 6-3.

From what I saw I felt Southern first line was out for too long, they were starting to get tired. They were very dominant, but you could see they were fading….

Not sure what happend next game

They won the second game, not sure of the score.

Sounds like similar results to those between Southern Knights and Canterbury Devils from their pre-season games held a few weeks back. I believe they were beaten in their first game, but came back strong in the second game.

Canterbury beat Southern in both the pre season games held three weeks ago. 6-1 and… 9-4 or something?

I thought they won the second game. I remember hearing that Jamiee wasn’t able to play in goal for the first game, but did in the second. So perhaps they just did a lot better when Jaimee played rather than actually winning. That’s  not what my fuzzy recollection of events was though.

    This is all second hand.

I understand that Southern lost both pre-season games to Canterbury.

i was told that Southern won the second game against Auckland 8-7 and that it was a very exciting third period. Southern was down something like 6-2 going into it, and caught up. The equalizing goal came close to the end. Then with a minute or less to go, Southern was playing shorthanded, killing a penalty, and Auckland decided to pull their goalie.  The winning Southern goal was made by a back-handed shot hit into an empty net from just over halfway down the ice.

Southern got cleaned up by Canterbury last night in Gore well and truly.

Came back to draw this morning’s game 3-3.

Canterbury are looking pretty solid so far – they just cleaned up Auckland twice this weekend.  Game 1 was a 5-1 win, and Game 2 just this morning was 7-1 Canterbury.  Some talented young players on the Canty team, like Jagau, Miller, Ratcliffe, Kennedy, Apps, and Hotchin doing a good job in net.  If you get a chance, go along and watch some of these games – its good hockey!

Hi Ryan, long time listener, first time caller  <img decoding=” title=”Tongue” />
No, I don’t have anything to do with the league – I’m just a fan.  Based in Christchurch (perhaps obvious)

I didn’t see yesterday’s game, but Southern were very impressive this morning. They rattled Auckland with their hitting and looked good all over the ice.

The powerplay goal was two touch passes to the shot and would have looked good on a national league team, let alone U16s.

Southern looked good yesterday, but a couple of their players just got lazy towards the end and allowed the Auckland team to sink an unexpected goal towards the end.

Congratulations to Canterbury who (if the maths supplied to me is correct) have wrapped up the inaugural NZJEL trophy with 2 wins from 2 against Southern.  Yesterday’s game started physically but ended up with Canterbury dominating 15 to 4, while today’s game was a much closer affair, with Southern trailing by 5 to 4 going into the third, only for Canterbury to ease out to a 9-5 victory.  Some concern over Southern’s Logan Froriep who was stretchered off to Hospital with what looked like extreme dehydration/exhaustion, while Canterbury’s Greg Miller consolidated his position at the top of the pointscoring table with a 12 goal weekend.
The crowd was treated to some very good quality hockey, with many people agreeing that these games exhibit better teamwork and passing plays than the NZIHL games.
