Hey when this talk of a magazine style show about nzihl was kicking around, there was also talk of Sky showing NHL in its entirety for 2010-2011 season.
Now I imagine entirety was an exaggeration, but presume sky was talking about playing some games during the regular season. So with the NHL season rapidly approaching, and the sky online guide still showing no ice hockey. Anyone know if this is still going ahead? or did it go the way of the magazine style show? (incidentally anyone know if that will attempted again next season?)
October 8, 2010 at 1:06 am #16381Azzy77ModeratorWell apparently something is happening.
Chicago Blackhawks vs Detriot Red Wings Sunday 1.30 pm Sky Sport 2
The game is then repeated on tuesday night and wednesday morning.
I guess its a start…
October 8, 2010 at 2:44 am #16382KyleMemberBe good for people to promote this and watch it. If it gets good viewer numbers (can Sky tell what each box is watching at a particular time?) then it’s more likely they’ll see a market and get more of it, and also look favourably on our local games getting on.
I made a facebook group to make it easy to promote: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=1 … 3544341729

October 14, 2010 at 5:41 am #16385SlapshotProdsMemberHi guys,
yes more NHL will be on screens and it started with the coverage of the NHL finals during 2010.
There will be more coverage for this coming season and Sky will be monitoring ratings. Obviously the more people watching the better.
This will effect coverage of the NZ game as well, so get your mates watching. We are indeed intending to make an ice hockey magazine show for the next NZ season, but making TV is expensive and we need to get sponsors on board.
In the meantime, please tune in to the NZIHL Grand Final and let Sky know you want more by watching.

October 14, 2010 at 6:32 am #16386KyleMemberooh good, hope you’ve got all the issues sorted, looking forward to seeing the game.
Filming of NZ-AUS matches was a bit average in terms of quality, so having a team around that can do a good job with the international games coming up in August would be great.
October 14, 2010 at 7:50 am #16387SlapshotProdsMemberWe would love to cover the internationals, including NZ in Australia in April, but it all comes down to sponsorship. Putting anything on TV is not cheap and certainly not as easy as getting out your handycam.
Filming ice hockey in New Zealand is a new experience for the entire production crew, you’ll notice when you watch the final that the coverage improves throughout as the operators adjust to the pace of the game.
There are other little issues to deal with as well, if anyone has any sway over the following
– The rink lights need to match. We had some problems with lights being either yellow or blue for the final, quite important that they’re all the same in the future.
– Netting. While the birds nest is the norm in NZ, it is not overseas and obviously gets in the way of our cameras. The introduction of glass at all rinks will obviously be a big improvement, but so is educating new people about the puck, the same as a cricket ball.
October 14, 2010 at 10:23 pm #16388Azzy77ModeratorI think the problem over the history of Ice Hockey Coverage is the sporadic nature of it. No consistency.
Channel 9 has covered 3 games (Stampede-Admirals, Thunder-Red Devils, Thunder Swarm)
Cue Tv has covered the 2 Australian games
And now we have this new group. And it would appear to me, they never talk to each other, so the problems encountered by each when they first cover it , is encountered by them all. (I know for a fact this is the case for first two since I was involved in part with both, just speculating this didn’t happen in the last case although I could be wrong.)
So hopefully if this new group starts to cover multiple games then the knowledge of covering hockey will become consistent…As far as the bad lighting with light not matching that’s a Botany issue, we had to stop a game for 5 minutes up there this year because the lights kept going out.
The netting is an Auckland/Queenstown issue because CHCH and Dunedin both have full glass.
Although the netting above the glass in Dunedin is a problem encountered by the Cue Tv crew during the internationals due to its height and being unable to lower it enough, making it difficult to get shots close to the northern side of the rink……But if there are regular games being covered I am sure a more permanent solution could be found to this problem.

[/quote:3geeryr2]I believe they’ll be on Sky TV along with all the other NZ Winter Games. I was thinking more of setting yourselves up as the experts on filming ice hockey games.
October 15, 2010 at 4:22 am #16390SlapshotProdsMemberI can assure you any coverage comes down to money and if it isn’t there, coverage doesn’t happen.
Consistency is an issue, but only because the money isn’t there to sustain it. Having worked at Ch9 years ago, I can tell you that there’s usually enough to make what is effectively a ‘pilot’, but if more money isn’t injected, it cannot be sustained.
The same issue exists at the moment. Yes we’ve covered the NZIHL Grand Final, but it was very expensive. The ice hockey community needs to put the feelers out for sponsors if any more coverage is to be had. You certainly can’t just expect it.
In regards to the lighting, yes the lights could be brighter, but I was referring to the colour of the lights. Some were yellow and some were blue. It’s very hard to spot with the naked eye, but shows up much more on television. It doesn’t matter which they are, just as long as they are all the same.
In regards to these problems and the netting, we cannot do it all alone. If people within the ice hockey community show some initiative in solving these issues in their own areas it is a massive help.
