You can see the hit here at about 38 seconds:

5+ game for the hit, but no further suspension.
The initial contact looks OK, the penalty must arise from the fact that Chara is responsible for how Pacioretty makes contact with the boards (which is pretty bad).
Discussion?

That seems like a fairly easy thing to do by accident. There seems to be a lot of flap about it now, but it’s always been a known hazard of playing hockey that you might get your head obliterated if you take a check in that position.
Perhaps this will motivate them to introduce a rule explicitly banning body checks in that section of the rink? Or maybe that section of glass should have a wide curve in it so that you just bash off it rather than having you head stop dead in it’s tracks?
Any other ideas on how to prevent this sort of thing happening again?
March 11, 2011 at 1:00 am #16479Azzy77ModeratorYeah I think bit of overreaction getting the cops involved. It was undoubtedly a late hit, but if it was on the other side of the rink, we wouldn’t have even heard about it.
I was talking to Vpatrol, and like he said its no different to if in Rugby a guy decides to give another player a bit of an extra shove as he is going out of bounds and trips and breaks his neck on a camera mount or a advertising hoarding. Or even being tackled into the goalposts (ala Kevin Locke)
The injury was caused by the location not the act. And that is not Chara’s fault. I think the deeper issue is a safety one caused by rink design.
I think maybe they should look into making the area safer, why not have glass that kinda of curves instead of 90 degrees, so if you are hit into it, so slide around it, instead of just stopping, which is where the injury occurred. It is also only there to separate players right? There is nothing really in there, is there a a way to make collapsible? So that when (and it will happen again) it happens again, it gives, so the player isn’t taking all the force?
I mean it is similar to how goals used to be bolted into the ice, that caused countless injuries, until they made them loose, so a hard enough impact would remove them from their moorings, to cause less injury.

[/quote:3p6y27mt]Not his fault, but his responsibility. As the checking player you’re responsible for the other person’s safety. Hard to adjust your check for the location on the ice sure, but Pacioretty can’t do much about protecting himself there.
I found it interesting that the call was checking to the head. No check to the head there, the check was into the body and the head was driven into the post – I would have called that boarding.
Better design would surely help – I worry about the posts at the end of the benches at the Dunedin rink. The pads come off pretty easily and it’s a hard edge.
March 11, 2011 at 4:16 am #16481vpatrolMemberyou can’t blame Chara for rink design nor location of the hit. If the hit is legal on the other side of the ice, then its legal everywhere….the lateness notwithstanding. It was a freak accident. No malicious intent. Chara doesn’t need to be cheap to hurt someone.

March 11, 2011 at 6:34 am #16483KyleMemberNo that’s a rule.
If you check someone, and it drives their head or neck into the boards, that’s boarding. Unless the referee rules that the checked player turned in some way so that the checking player was unable to prevent it. Basically if you hit someone, you’re assuming some responsibility for their safety when they land.
I can’t think of a way you could have a boarding penalty otherwise.
