Well the AIHL has just announced that starting in 2012 in Australia, the top two teams from each of the NZIHL and AIHL will compete in a champions league.
First we heard of it as a team was from the AIHL press release.
What do you think?
August 21, 2011 at 1:48 am #17232imported_RyanMemberInteresting development. I hope the teams can afford the extra expense.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how the Kiwi teams cope with a level which is reputedly a step above what they’re used to.
[quote:3unhspeq]From the NZIHL, the Botany Swarm and the Southern Stampede … will join the Melbourne Ice (2011 AIHL Minor Premiers) as the first teams[/quote:3unhspeq]
August 21, 2011 at 2:01 am #17233vpatrolMemberI want to know the scheduling. If it doesn’t happen during the season when imports are available, then the aihl teams will have a massive advantage. Also in the aihl’s favor is that they can add players at any point during the season. NZIHL can’t replace players without consent from the other teams. If star Johnny has a bad case of the flu that week, tough luck is the case in nz. AIHL teams can bring in any registered player at any time…or atleast that used to be the case.
August 21, 2011 at 6:12 am #17234ActiveMemberGoing by the last two games between NZ and Aus the kiwi teams have a lot of catching up to do in terms of skill level

[/quote:1348m3s4]That’s because it’s not approved yet. It’s only a concept at this stage, NZIHF hasn’t even discussed it as a formal proposal. Australia has jumped the gun by about 5 steps.
August 21, 2011 at 10:08 pm #17236vpatrolMemberit does say “in principle”
August 21, 2011 at 11:23 pm #17237SlapshotProdsMemberYes the gun has been jumped, but the enthusiasm of the Aussies shows a dramatic shift in thinking and that’s a good thing. Hopefully this will all just gestate quietly in the background until a formal plan and announcement can be made.
August 22, 2011 at 8:56 am #17238kelf6966MemberIf you guys actually want the league to grow, then the addition of a Trans Tasman Tournament is the obvious next step.
This has amazing potential:
The access to Import players who are willing to travel in their off season,
Potential Sponsorship opportunities, Media coverage for players, coaches, teams and both leagues.Think we need to focus on the positives on this one, rather than bitching about costs, scheduling etc.
I think the teams that do make it would be stoked for a Weekend in Aussie facing some good opposition.
As to the state of the Ice Blacks vs “The Australian Team”, if we had staked our national team with a line of the NZIHL imports there may have been a different result.
As it was to lose 4 -1 in the final I think we can hold our heads high with the standard of the New Zealand National Team.Stop bitching about it and embrace it as an opportunity to showcase Ice Hockey in both countries.

[/quote:3fri4jo2]hmmm. I see a couple posts referring to the aussies being at a higher level then us. That statement is true but neither post said it was a bad idea. Two posts said Aus has jumped the gun and by all accounts they have. I see a couple of facts written but not one bitch.
That leaves my post wanting to know about scheduling which is a genuine curiosity. I’ve been involved in both leagues and think its relevant. Imports were the difference in the NZWG so its a potential issue. Existing NZIHL roster rules could also be an issue. I think the set rosters should be changed regardless of what happens with TTCL. Nobody has said it was a bad idea or has bitched about anything.
Let’s not forget that a forum is about exchanging ideas.

Adhere to the party line at all times. Dissenters will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.
August 22, 2011 at 9:22 pm #17243Azzy77ModeratorFrom my sources in AIHL, they are planning it mid-late June. In middle of season, they want it held after the two teams from each league have played each other, so they can use that to seed them.

August 23, 2011 at 12:40 pm #17245imported_RyanMemberI’m not seeing any bitching either.
Disappointing to hear it was just the AIHL jumping the gun ” title=”Sad” /> Hopefully something can be sorted to make it happen in time for the 2012 season.
