Is there any possibility of allocating some ice time for school practices next year?
It is the secondary schools tournament week next week and it is likely that all the Dunedin schools will finish near the bottom again. Lacking knowledge and experience in certain situations, eg breaking out of your own zone is a big reason why. If DIHA wants to lift the level of Dunedin ice hockey and compete with Christchurch, Queenstown etc in the next 5 years they need to start giving the schools a practice.
I’m sure at some stage during the week it would be possible to move the public session onto the curling rink and have school practices on the main ice.
Is there anyone on this board (Ryan, Kyle?) who would have a say in this or know someone I could get in touch with re practices?

Neither Ryan or I are the definitive on the subject, but we can help point you in the right direction.
I think schools have a practice or two before the Dunedin high schools tournament starts. That’s not much I know.
If schools wanted more practices – regularly throughout the year, or in bulk some time, then I’m sure that would be possible. Before the high schools competition starts, Wednesday afternoons are available. Some mornings before school would be available, and there’s time on weekends – mornings and evenings. The school should talk to rink management about time.
You might also want to look at coaching, in which case your school should really talk to Coach Bode.
Also, while it doesn’t help the high school team directly, if all your players came along to Thursday night midget and junior practices, they’d all learn these skills and be able to take them out on the ice for their high school team. I know a bunch of them already are, and they’ll be noticing the difference.

Just thought I’d let you know the DISC has all weekday mornings booked up from 6-9, and then Morgan seems to have the ice to herself, and 7-10 on Saturday. Not too sure about Sunday though, Icentric has the ice from 9-11.
Unfortunately ice time is hard to come by on a busy rink!August 22, 2007 at 10:24 pm #6589KyleMember"twolefts":jpn28lbs wrote:Hey,

[/quote:jpn28lbs]Neil will bump some figure skating for ice hockey. Figure skaters don’t pay the full ice time, ice hockey almost always has to.
August 22, 2007 at 10:24 pm #6590twoleftsMemberHe bumps we complain
August 22, 2007 at 10:26 pm #6591KyleMemberThat’s Neil’s problem!
August 22, 2007 at 10:31 pm #6592twoleftsMemberTrue, I agree with you, we need more ice time for hockey, the couple of hours we get now are just not enough!
August 22, 2007 at 10:35 pm #6593twoleftsMemberWay off topic, but figure skaters pay less for ice time becuase they train more often (up to everyday of the week) and have to pay WAY more than hockey players for training.
August 22, 2007 at 11:04 pm #6594KyleMemberYeah, I don’t mind the deal the figure skaters have. It’s not a popular time that they take up, and it would be difficult for figure skaters to get very good if they had to pay $150/hour like we do, because that would require 20 people on the ice every hour.
But it’s important that hockey teams keep in mind that those times are available, it’s a definite agreement that use of the ice that pays the full price takes priority over things that don’t. The figure skaters won’t like being bumped, but hockey pays its way, and the financial health of the rink is very important for all of us.
August 23, 2007 at 2:44 am #6595ActiveMemberThe more ice sports grows the less ice time there is at reasonable hours. If you want to train as a school team you will need to choose a time at silly hours of the night eg 10pm being the earliest. Using the curling rink to make room for practice sessions on the main rink is a no go because the time taken to prepare the curling ice afterwards doesnt make it worth it. The schools hockey are lucky to get the ice on wednesdays and there are some grumblings that they should lose it in favour of the clubs. Bottom line is if you want to improve join the club and come to regular practices ( like Christchurch school kids do) or book some wierd late time after everyone else has finished. The former is the better option because you will get top quality coaching
