So … we all know about the developments in Wellington in regards to an ice rink being built there, the new Tekapo rink was finished a few months ago and news has been circulating about the new synthetic rink being installed in Wanaka which will hopefully be in action in a few months.
But … has anyone heard about the brand new ice rink being built in Frans Josef?
I just heard from a reliable source that a consortium of American businessmen have construction of an 11 million dollar facility with an ice climbing wall and an ice rink underway there already. This is the first I’ve heard of it, does anyone else know about this? Anyone have any details on it?
Apparently it is not intended for hockey players necessarily, but will be marketed primarily to the tourist market. I haven’t found out if it will have hockey boards or not.

This looks like the place … http://www.glaciercentre.co.nz/%5B/url:pnnq3lkm%5DThere doesn’t seem to be anything on their website about a skating rink though.

August 29, 2007 at 10:06 am #6628imported_RyanMemberAnd another tidbit of rink information. The grapevine is saying that the Queenstown rink will be open all year round from now on. Anyone heard about this yet? Or is it just rumour?

It is indeed true, he closed it in over the summer, and it won’t be melted this summer.

[/quote:5s3sw2zc]When I saw it the other day it had glass windows. Will they be staying? Doesn’t seem like the most effective insulation.
This is great news for Queenstown hockey players.
