I was refereeing a couple of high school games last week and gave out some penalties that the players didn’t know about. I thought I would start a topic with some of them, and if players want to ask questions about rules etc, they could post and we could try and educate ourselves.

A player got the puck up in the air and knocked it up a couple of times on his stick, which looked really good. The third time he hit it it went up in the air, and into the netting.

[i:37ow78po]Rule 554 c) Shooting of Throwing the Puck Outside the Playing Area
A player or a goalkeeper who directly shoots, throws, or bats the puck with his hand or stick outside the playing area, shall be assessed a Minor Penalty.[/i:37ow78po]

That’s not an obscure rule, you see it every few games in the NHL.

Players from one of the benches were leaning over the boards. The other team sent the puck up the boards and it hit one of their gloves and bounced off.

[i:37ow78po]Rule 534 Interference, a) A player on either the player’s bench of the penalty bench who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movement of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play shall be assessed a Minor penalty.[/i:37ow78po]

Never had that one before, but if your gloves/stick are over the ice surface, it’s a risk you take. I didn’t see exactly whose gloves it was, so I made it a bench minor.

I got these two goalie ones earlier in the year:

Goalie makes a save and in doing so slides back to be fully behind the goal line. The opposing team pressures him, and I blow the whistle.

[i:37ow78po]Rule 558 Falling on the Puck by a Goalkeeper a) If a goalkeeper, whose body is entirely outside the goal crease, and when the puck is behind the goal line or beyond the two lines on each side of the face-off circles, deliberately falls on or gathers the puck into his body, or holds or places the puck against any part of the goal or the boards, he shall be assessed a Minor Penalty.[/i:37ow78po]

Note if you’re holding the puck and it is behind the goal line, some part of your body needs to be inside the crease. There’s heaps of space in front of the net that the goalie can cover it up, but not much behind.

Goalie makes a save, and uses his glove to send the puck forward, hand passing it to one of his team mates.

[i:37ow78po]Rule 560 Handling the Puck with the Hands by a Goalkeeper b) If a goalkeeper throws the puck forward and the puck is first played by a team-mate, he shall be assessed a Minor Penalty.[/i:37ow78po]

Note that it’s the ‘forward’ part that makes it the penalty, if the goalkeeper drops the puck down or just takes their glove off it and leaves it there, or sends it back (or does what Stefan likes doing and drops it onto the stick, which sends it forward), that’s fine.

So if I take a shot and accidentally roof it, I get a penalty? I don’t recall seeing anyone get a penalty for that before. Isn’t it just a penalty if you do it intentionally? I thought the ref was supposed to hold a faceoff when that happens.

I always thought it was an automatic penalty for leaning over at all, but that refs were just being lazy by not handing them out. I guess not then. A useful thing to know as it will encourage me to lean over the boards more often <img decoding=” title=”Smiley” />

Yes, you do get a penalty. It would make sense to me if the rule didn’t apply in the offensive zone, but it does. The referee will hold a faceoff when he doesn’t give a penalty. Where it’s a deflection, it’s gone out off the glass, it’s gone into the benches, it’s come off the goalie etc.
