Hi Marmaduke80, welcome to the forums.

You are absolutely welcome to start playing hockey here. Most hockey here is pretty casual. Currently, casual games are being held on sunday nights, and are suitable for a player of virtually any level (from absolute beginners up to NZIHL players).

Additionally, the Dunedin Ice Hockey League (DIHL) will be starting up at some stage, though I’m not sure when. Kyle did post it at some stage, but it was somewhere between about March and May.

I’m assuming you’re still in England at the moment, so when you get to NZ feel free to stop by again and check out what’s going on.

There’s no need to be nervous about starting up again – you couldn’t possibly be a worse player than me

Regards,
Chris

Skating at the rink is pretty cheap, and it’s a good rink. The facilities could be a little more comfortable, but the ice itself is magnificent :-)

If you can squeeze any gear into your bags, it might be an idea to bring some. Gear here is quite pricey by international standards, from what I can ascertain.

Yeah, definitely what Chris said about gear. Maybe sticks would be a pain, but definitely bring your skates and any protective gear you can. Prices are very high here.

Na its all a lil too small now aswell and my skates are damaged. I can always get some second hand kit. My bag is full aswell all i got is my shirt lol. I phone the ice rink and i can pick up some skates for $300 which isnt too bad. The main things i want after a while off playing would be good gloves and skates and the best stick i ever used is a blue vapour thing which i do anything to get again.

If you’re going to buy new, I wouldn’t recommend the rink. They’ve got a shockingly small amount of stock, and they’re expensive. Try http://www.sk8.co.nz if you’re going to buy from here in NZ. Particularly if you’re passing through Christchurch on your way here (which you probably are if you’re coming from England) stop in at their shop and buy there and save yourself the courier fee.

Yeah, http://www.sk8.co.nz is the place to get your gear alright. Don’t buy from the rink, they’re pretty shocking on price and selection.

They can courier it down to you while you’re in dunedin if you know your sizes, which is a pretty cheap and easy option.

If your income is still coming in pounds, then you probably won’t worry too much, but if you’re going to be earning in NZD you’ll notice the pinch fairly quickly
