I didn’t think they stood out, will be good to see Bertie back.
July 29, 2009 at 8:39 am #12777Jofa playaMemberthey didnt stand out but they slotted in so well, and really helped out the stampede goalie he needed it

[/quote:2mycdjyb]Why are NZ refs only allowed to ref U18’s?? Seems abit crazy, I think that a relationship with Aussie could be very rewarding:
Ice Blacks vs Team Australia (called Team Australia as I do believe that imports from the AIHL are coming and playing against IB – Sad)
This should be an annual event / seriesAIHL vs NZIHL series Top teams of both facing off in a series
AIHL Allstars vs NZIHL Allstars series – Best of the Best from both Leagues NZIHL Allstars could be choosen after a Skate of Origin Series in NZ – North vs South!
Refs Exchange programme, so we can learn and they can learn
Yes there are going to be costs involved, but who the hell is not going to watch a game of Ice Hockey against the Aussies.
This could be educational and finacial for both countries.
I think we need to stop using finacial issues as a reason for the game to be unable to grow in this country, and by grow I mean all of us involved players, coaches, refs and god forbid the fans will one day know the rules so we don’t have to blame the refs all the frickin time.
Hopefully these games on Sky will create more interest, but after these games we need a big push on marketing around the NZIHL final few rounds to keep interest.
Bla bla bla bla
July 29, 2009 at 10:08 am #12781imported_RyanMemberYeah, I doubt financial concerns are a problem as far as Australia vs NZ events go. The gate takings should be able to make up for the travel costs fairly easily.
July 29, 2009 at 11:56 am #12782KyleMemberCosts over $10,000 to take a team over the tasman for a few days. Plus you have to bring the New Zealand players all together.
You have to sell a hell of a lot of tickets to recover that cost, plus all the other costs of hosting games.
Not many rinks could hold enough people to sell that many tickets. Queenstown and Christchurch would be too small, you couldn’t seat more than 500 people in them.
July 29, 2009 at 12:32 pm #12783imported_RyanMember500 people * $30 = $15,000 / game
$15,000 * 2 games = $30,000 totalAdd into that funding from other sources and the cost seems irrelevant to me. Or am I missing something here?
Of course this is taking the risk that you actually get 500 people per game. But I’d be surprised if that wasn’t doable in Christchurch, Auckland or Dunedin. You could split those two games between Christhchurch and Dunedin if you wanted to reduce the risk. Christchurch is almost guaranteed to be packed out, whereas Dunedin is more of a risk but could potentially fill the stands with 1500 people.
July 29, 2009 at 1:00 pm #12784vpatrolMembera revenue sharing agreement could be worked out as well between the two countries. Also remember that the aihl have a number of teams who fully fund themselves. They may not worry so much as we do with funding.
The IB’s playing Aus has to be beneficial. Every year there are expensive training camps. Since Aus is the team we want to beat, makes sense to play them more often I would think. Logistically though, its not as easy as one would hope. Their schedules may not work with ours. You ideally want two in form teams facing eachother.

$15,000 * 2 games = $30,000 total
[/quote:35f89rjh]1. I doubt you’d sell well at $30/game.
2. That’s a full price ticket. Half your audience wouldn’t pay that.
3. I meant 500 over the whole weekend. Neither Queenstown or christchurch seat very many. Once you’ve given away your comps for media, volunteers etc, you might sell 250/night and be full.July 30, 2009 at 12:16 am #12786imported_RyanMemberWhat is a “comp”?

I assumed Queenstown would be charging something like that for their NZIHL games (just a guess, I’ve never been there for an NZIHL game before).
July 30, 2009 at 12:40 am #12788KyleMembercomps = complimentaries. Media, sponsors, volunteers. Players often get a couple of tickets to give to family/friends.
Stampede tickets are more than ours – $20 for adults. Ours are $10 for adults, $5 for children. NZ-Australia isn’t exactly top tier ice hockey, $30 is a lot to charge someone who knows nothing about ice hockey and thinks they’ll take their family along to try it out.
But whatever ticket price you charge, you won’t get all of it to fund the teams. The rink will keep a significant portion of the money wherever you hold it.
So if we had a double header and kept $10 (if tickets were $30/adult, $15/child, the rink kept half of all sales) on average from each ticket to fund both teams, in order to break even on a $15,000 cost you’d need to sell 750 tickets a game. Probably 800 spectators in the building.
I don’t know if either of the Auckland rinks can hold that many, but Queenstown and Christchurch can’t.
We broke that number for world champs for the last game against Ireland, but that was on the basis of a week of news stories in the paper every day, TV coverage, and a lot of people that travelled here from around New Zealand for the whole week.
July 30, 2009 at 12:56 am #12789vpatrolMemberwhy does the rink require half? How about we pay them the $300 per hour ice hire and they can keep vending sales. That’s how nzihl works. Why would it be different for IB’s vs Aus. Plus that game would be an awesome way to get kids caring about competing for an IB’s spot in the future. Can’t put a price on that.
July 30, 2009 at 1:40 am #12790thirteenMemberyea pay rink what vpatrol said and then they can make a killing off food and drinks, if we had 1000 people here to watch the nz aus games thatd be a lot of money they would make on food and drinks
