I’d take the claims a lot more seriously if they were made by a neutral person, with refereeing experience.
[/quote]i may not be neutral kyle (no one is neutral) and i havnt reffed much but you should be able to tell i have enough experiance to judge the way a game is called by the way i write.
i have watched paul, pete and ryan ref through the years and watched them grow as offcials and have seen them all get progresivly better, become more confident with calls, communicate more with the players on and off the ice Jerome has not
July 28, 2009 at 5:47 am #12747vpatrolMemberI’ve had a number of conversations with Jerome off the ice on some on. The approach matters with him I reckon. He’s explained his call. Whether I agree or not, its his call and he will justify it. His justification usually makes sense but what can’t change is what he thought he saw. That might be different to me. But if someone is yelling and swearing, not many refs will give you a sympathetic ear. That’s not a support of him and his performance or anything. You can make your own mind, which you have as will I. He is approachable though but maybe in a different manner than Chris or Paul.
I think it would be great though if we had atleast a half dozen or more refs who have the experience to take a game. With more games being played in the league, I’m sure more will develop. Until then…..
July 28, 2009 at 5:53 am #12748Chin StrapMemberon the money there vpatrol, if only people with reffing experiance can be taken seriously well then only 4 people in the country can comment as well would be good to broadn the horizon on that one
July 28, 2009 at 5:57 am #12749Jofa playaMemberim sure you’ve talked to him on and off the ice probably to check up on him seeing how his going playing in your team, u red devils just get old lewis in there to bitch and moan to the ref for everything and to stay on the ice between periods to have a good old chat
July 28, 2009 at 5:59 am #12750imported_RyanMember[b:2ba6rrwh]Moderately amusing story …. [/b:2ba6rrwh]
I recall Andy Kibblewhite getting quite irate about the Christchurch Snipers complaining that he didn’t bother calling something in a inline hockey game in Christchurch. The thing is, the coach of the Snipers had called the referees over to their bench to discuss something and they did (which they’re not supposed to do, the refs. are supposed to deal with the team captain on the rink AFAIK). Then when they weren’t looking, one of the Snipers oponents welted a player over the head with his stick. The refs never saw it happened and therefore never called it. The thing is, the refs shouldn’t have both been staring at the Snipers bench at the time.
This is all good and well, refs aren’t perfect and crap happens. The amusing thing though, was that anyone and everyone who saw what happened (including members of the oposing team) stood and hurled abuse at Andy and the other referee (can’t recall who that was) for it. Then the next day everyone was still ranting at them and saying they sucked. Andy got quite shitted off and ignored them all.
I waited another day, went to talk to Andy about it and asked how he felt about it and he went on a little rant for about 2 mins before I politely explained exactly what happened. He seemed quite surprised by it and his response was something like this … “oh crap, how come no one told me that’s what happened?”. Of course the reason no one told him was because they were too busy ranting like a bunch of morons and so Andy treated them accordingly. They deserved to be ignored, mistakes happen and a referee should ignore anyone ranting like a lunatic and treat them with the respect they deserve … ie: none.
Funnily enough, explaining what happened in a polite, non-threatening way was quite effective and I assume from then on Andy knew not to turn his back on everything but the bench as stuff like that can happen, particularly when you know the other referee isn’t paying attention either.
Lesson to be learned here … you can rant all you want about referees, but it’s unlikely to change anything. Either become one yourself, or provide them with helpful feedback. We need as many referees as possible, bitching about them is only likely to make it worse as we’ll have an even smaller base of referees to choose from.

[/quote:22dnkqf7]The problem is that half a dozen people, all experienced players, referees, will come to different conclusions than you.
You’ve tagged Jerome, but it’s no secret if you ask around Thunder then they’ll say Jerome is OK and Paul isn’t. Yet if you talk to Southern Peewees from last year, you might hear about Ryan and the calls he made in a game.
People playing in a game, and their supporters are the worst judge of referees. Not that they can’t, but they’re invested in the game and their perspective of it. I’m fully in favour of referees getting feedback on their performance to try and get better, but you wouldn’t turn to the players or a coach, you’d turn to a referee who watched you.
July 28, 2009 at 9:01 am #12752kelf6966MemberI would love to be a ref especially if I could change the arm bands to Yellow with a nice blue trim, but as Plod stated I would need to learn to skate!
Even if I started now – how long does anyone expect me to be at a level where I could ref a game in the NZIHL with the players having faith in me to make fair calls?
I think if we can all wait till 2015 when I feel confident to skate out and be the Queenstown Ref then let’s go, someone tell me where to sign.
We had an aussie ref last season, not saying he was any better or more experienced than our guys but was good to see, is there anyway we can do some sort of exchange programme with the AIHL???

I don’t know how the refs have gotten on since 2004 but my one year riding the pine in the aihl saw some pretty average refs. A few very good ones but some not so awesome refs too. That opinion might be skewed though because we had a few marginally dirty players who took many penalties.
July 28, 2009 at 11:42 am #12755imported_RyanMemberYou played in the AIHL? Cool ” title=”Smiley” />
July 28, 2009 at 11:53 am #12756KyleMemberHe never said he played…
(since it’s international pick on vince day, I don’t want to be left out)
July 28, 2009 at 11:59 am #12757vpatrolMemberyeah I played for Canberra. Never started though. Just a back up. Big surprise there.
July 28, 2009 at 9:47 pm #12758plod16MemberThere is a referee exchange program between here and Oz, but we (NZ) are limited to reffing in their Tange tournment (U18) and their ref comes over to here for a weekend to ref Nat Leag.
Ironically, they seem to rate our Nat Leag as being comparable to theirs without the paid imports. Would be good to get a Trans Tasman series started.
From what I have seen in Oz, we are lucky with the refs we have as they have some pretty average ones.
I believe that one of their more experienced ones is travelling with the Aussie team in 3 weeks.

[/quote:41pcniek]Would be good to see the winning teams of the two national leagues go head-to-head.
July 28, 2009 at 10:10 pm #12760vpatrolMemberfrom what I understand, it’s mainly newcastle with a few sydney bears thrown in. Vlad Rubes probably. Newcastle has always been a frontrunner in the aihl but it will be interesting to see them without their imports. That being said, Matt Ezzy is a northstar so goaltending won’t be a problem.
