They don’t allow the New Zealand players to play in the State of Origin in Aussie
so in the New Zealand Skate of Origin it should be the same.[/quote:1fwh58ao]
I’m not an import however if we are talking about best goalies, no offence to Sheepo but the two best in the south this year are Justin and Rick (Rick on form and not numbers). If it’s purely by the numbers, the list was chosen before the sat game where I was beating sheepo in all categories. My opinion of the game has nothing to do with my involvement however. I wasn’t expecting selection. What I want is the best product on the ice to showcase ice hockey in NZ. The import players who are on the leaderboard should be included.
Canterbury had a kiwi vs international game early in the year which was a fundraiser for minor hockey. Raised a good chuck of change. Even Jeff and Mike took part. That model could work well. The kiwi team would clearly be the in form kiwi’s/IB’s. Imports make up the rest. Essentially the cream of the crop in NZ. A rookie/junior game could also showcase the up and comers who are the future IB’s and league leaders.
That would be an all star game.

– Move on!Nice to finally meet you Vince ” title=”Smiley” />
August 31, 2009 at 10:03 am #14092vpatrolMemberIt’s not about moving on. It’s about what was originally intended and what it is now and what it could have been. This forum doesn’t seem to be about moving on anyways. Plus the “top” NZ players were not all selected anyways.

[/quote:39hmmnlf]I’m dubious about a game in front of… 3 – 400 people, pretty much all of whom are already ice hockey fans, doing much to showcase NZ ice hockey. Yes it would be a good game, but you’ll get as good a game in Christchurch or better this weekend at the final.
It’s my understanding that it has a dual purpose, and one of those purposes is a trial for next years ice blacks. In that case, it wouldn’t make sense to only have 18 or so NZers playing, you need to trial at least 30 to check out the next tier down.
August 31, 2009 at 11:56 am #14094vpatrolMemberWhat was more exciting, watching NZ play Aus or when they played Ireland? What was a better game for the fans who will pay to watch this game? A game featuring kiwi against kiwi or a game including imports that raises the calibre of the game?
Take away the Bjorkmans and the Salsl’s and Kemps and Kaszala’s and this weekends final loses a lot.
I think its an opportunity lost but that’s just me. (and also every other player I’ve talked to but I’ll let them join slapshot and make their opinions known for themselves)
August 31, 2009 at 7:51 pm #14095rookie19MemberGod I know, why wasnt half the Thunder on the roster? Terrible selection, who made these decisions?
August 31, 2009 at 11:07 pm #14096ActiveMemberI think maybe it could be god. God is anti Canadian apparently. Oh and he doesnt like those gays either.
September 1, 2009 at 12:49 am #14097Azzy77ModeratorUnofficially I have heard such crazy rumours as Mike Parsons is the third goalie for the south team? When did he play for any southern team? (he may have I am just not aware of it)
What was the criteria anyway?
Birthplace? First Rep side? First place you played Hockey? First NZIHL team?Because who has those records for example if Duncan Sykes had been selected he is potentially a North guy having first played at the Tamaki club.
And there other people that depending on the criteria could be from either side.I think the problem was they wanted to cover 2 bases with one game, and then it has become a mess.
If its an All Star game, play the best players in the country who can play including imports, because most of them are the All Stars of the league.
If it is a trial game surely people like Argyle, Down, Wilson etc who are not going to play in IB’s next year for various reasons, shouldn’t be in the squad because they would go to a trial.
So instead what we have is some sort of Frankenstein child of the two, that does both jobs half-assed, instead of one job really well.

A game of Kiwi against Kiwi is what Kiwi’s want to see!
If Kaszala is such a draw card why has he not played more games (surely if he raises the level of Ice Hockey in NZ so much he should have been there all season)And how would having the two highest penalised players Salzl (84 min) and Kemp (82 min)
add to the game?September 1, 2009 at 10:02 am #14100vpatrolMemberKaszala is the best player in the league based on pure skill.
Kemp and Salsl play physical hockey and aren’t afraid to drop gloves (which fans love) instead of watching guys run their mouths like tough guys but their gloves are glued to their hands and their cages taped tight to their helmets. Did I mention fans like a fight? I thought you liked physical hockey Kelf or is it because they aren’t Stampede players?

I assumed it would be the opposite and the reason for it being kiwi vs kiwi was for development purposes like others suggested above.

When I watch sports, I want to see the best players play regardless of nationality.
