So Andrew Hay just posted this question on his fb, and I was interested in the people of Slapshots opinon’s.
I will put a case forward for Thunder – Stampede : Although in the initial years this rivalry was one sided in the score line. The games were always physical and in recent times there has started to be some back and forth in the win column…. This rivalry also inherited some of the history between the two major clubs in Southern Dunedin and Queenstown.
But I am sure there are others, let me know what you think?

The history between these two teams goes back long before the teams were even incorporated, the history of competition between Queenstown and Dunedin has always been massive, even though for the last few years Queenstown/Stampede have had the upper hand in the skills department. The fact that the Thunder were originally a team of Stampede fringe players boosts this rivalry as the Thunder want to show that they are more than fringe players and have the potential to win the league. With the Thunders victories over the stampede last year, especially the 13-0 spanking on the Stampedes home turf, I can imagine that the Stampede will be back to prove a point, a point that the Thunder will do their best to not let them prove. Always physical, always fast and always full of grit and determination.

May 20, 2011 at 3:08 pm #16920imported_RyanMemberI’m assuming there isn’t much rivalry between the two Auckland teams as from what I’ve heard, they tend to feed players between the two rather than competing against one another. That’s third hand information though from south islanders, so it may be wrong though.

May 30, 2011 at 8:47 am #16924vpatrolMemberwell thunder entered the league in 2008 so they miss out on 3 years of previous NZIHL history. In 08 and 09, Stampede were the better team quite handily over thunder. There’s the whole SIHL thing but that’s not NZIHL. Plus I don’t think Stampede consider it a rivalry although they would have to confirm.
08 and 09 Devils were far and away better then Thunder. Last year was closer league-wide. With only 2 games this year and no real bad blood, I wouldn’t call it a rivalry and the team doesn’t consider the Thunder as a rivalry
Stampede and Devils have more of a history. Stampede were the team to beat in 05, 06. Devils had their number in 07. Tightly contested games in 08 with Devils on top. Met in the finals in 09. Split games I saw in chch last year. Both teams consider each other to be substantial threats and always have.
