ODT’s picked up on it now …
http://www.odt.co.nz/sport/other-sport/ … d-ice-taleMarch 24, 2011 at 2:27 am #10355imported_RyanMemberI received a phone call from the commerce commission today.
They are concerned about the situation, but say there’s not much they can do at this stage as there is no proof that the promoters are [b:23tsfuuu]explicitly[/b:23tsfuuu] breaking the fair trading act. They are very keen to hear back on any developments though, so please post here if you hear anything new on the subject and if it sounds like something they’d like to hear about, then I’ll forward it on.
March 25, 2011 at 12:59 am #10356Azzy77ModeratorWouldn’t their Ad proclaiming “For the first time ever in NZ, International Ice Hockey” be a lie?
March 25, 2011 at 3:10 am #10357imported_RyanMemberIs that ad still running?
March 25, 2011 at 3:37 am #10358Azzy77ModeratorYeah I just heard it on Radio Sport…
March 28, 2011 at 11:00 pm #10359imported_RyanMemberJust got another phone call from Douglas Webber wanting me to point out the following PDF which they said explains everything about their event and should make us all happy and smiley about it.
http://internationalicehockey.co.nz/Pre … 2.3.11.pdf
It doesn’t seem to include any new information that we would find useful at all.
I also discovered that this is apparently a “NZ$100 million product” … http://www.theglobalindian.co.nz/christ … ke-events/
[quote:1ms7sb3l]Bringing the international series to Christchurch is not without its problems; the North American tour directors are cautious about letting their NZ$100 million product come to a broken city.[/quote:1ms7sb3l]March 29, 2011 at 1:31 am #10360thirteenMemberI like that bit about players may not being able to make it because of legal obligations or injury. arent 2 of the main guys affected by injury? and doesnt their NHL contracts prevent them from playing unkess released?
March 29, 2011 at 1:50 am #10361KyleMemberTeams released on 21 July, first game 23 July.
Must be in case the plane crashes and they all die, you’d have to hope they’re not still scrabbling for players on the 20th.
March 29, 2011 at 3:07 am #10362Azzy77ModeratorMy favourite part, is that we will all get foam fingers if we attend. Hey its two teams of beer leaguers but don’t worry, we will all get foam fingers, and really isn’t that all we want in life a large novelty size foam finger??
Also I like the rule the team with the most goals over 3 game s wins.
Imagine this: Game 1. A:5 B:4 , Game 2 A:3 B:2 Game 3 A: 1 B: 4Team B wins on account of its goals = 10 and A’s only being 9 even though A won 2 out of the 3 games. Why to think it through…
I also notice reference to NHL players has been omitted from this press release. I smell covering their arses. Especially the part about understanding about injury and legal obligations, seeing as they have only named two players that means those two players aren’t coming, pretty much. Because I don’t expect the other players would pull out from injury in the 2 days between being named and expected to play.
And while I am ranting “…those who have been to an American Hockey game, know the hockey is only 1/2 the attraction…” well that is the case if the game is boring or lame, the last game I went to in America, at half time they had two pee wee teams playing, I didn’t see a single firework, and I think everyone must have eaten their foam fingers, because I couldn’t see any of them either. One suspects Douglas and Webber have never been to an American Hockey game.
I just like saying American Hockey game because I know it annoys Vpatrol
March 29, 2011 at 8:36 am #10363vpatrolMemberI like foam fingers and Prince William references. Not sure where they got the american hockey reference from….Kate Middleton. Can’t recall the fireworks displays at the dozen NHL games I’ve been at. Perhaps it had something to do with an indoor venue….2nd in line to the throne. Wonder where the 100 million came from. Promoters must have friends at westpac to get a line of credit that big. Or maybe they included the cost of the arena’s in their figures…Pike River…Victoria…Queensland….lost puppies etc etc.
March 29, 2011 at 9:25 pm #10364ActiveMemberHow about giving these guys a break. They are simply taking a product and advertising it. Im gonna presume that its a good thing for ice hockey
March 29, 2011 at 9:57 pm #10365Azzy77ModeratorYeah if advertised Truthfully. If they were advertising a game between decent players from North America that would be fine. But their less than ethical tactic of saying “Canada vs USA” all the time leaves one a little less than charitable towards them.

Presumably the America Hockey Experience we will look forward too, (I do realise these guys are Canadian)
March 30, 2011 at 4:15 am #10367ChrisMemberI was talking to the woman in the clothing store today, and upon hearing that I was an Ice Hockey player asked me, “Oh, are you excited about Canada and USA coming to play in NZ? I’m going to buy tickets!”
She was very annoyed to find out the truth of the matter, and won’t be buying tickets anymore.
I don’t see how the [b:1gi691wg]net[/b:1gi691wg] effect of bullshit like this is in any way good for hockey in NZ.
March 30, 2011 at 5:47 am #10368thirteenMemberWhat happens if the games are awful? and visibly a sham? it has the potential to ruin our ability to draw spectators to nzihl games and the various international games we have here throuhg lack of trust
