yet the Gooch says emphatically that it won’t be an exhibition!  HA!  Run time periods with 10 skaters per side not an exhibition?  It’s not a real hockey game so not sure what they are presenting.

that would be the full roster.  only 10 skaters per side

The big question I have is … how many of them will actually turn up?

It’s all good and well to have some crappy former NHL guys on your roster to make you look good in the media, but technically they could just yank these guys from their rosters at the very last minute and make some dumb claim about contractual issues or some such crap. I don’t think we’ve seen the end of the lies and it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out. Or perhaps the players will be turning up expecting to be paid, but will be treated the same as reported for those involved with the Crusty Demons event? If that happened, then things could get really messy as those players would then go back to Canada and the USA and be in the really sucky position of having to launch a legal challenge from across the globe.

    Thanks!

I spoke to the promoter about 2 months ago and managed to get a player list out of him.  Back then there were 16 players, 9 of them were active in the NHL plus 2 retired ex-NHLers and 2 playing in minors with NHL experience.

His own words were “it’s not about the players involved, it’s about the spectacle” and that’s clearly the case judging by the drop from who they supposedly had signed up 2 months ago to who they have actually coming.  They sold the event on “NHL megastars” and clearly there are none.  The Stanely Cup winner and Olympic medalist is the same person – John Grahame – and he was essentially the back up goalie in both circumstances.

I did ask the promoter if this was the full roster, no reply, I think this is it.

combined total of 22 players was stated in some media involving promoters not long ago.  Far too few to have a competitive game at those ticket prices.  Those who know nothing about hockey may feel satisfied with the smoke and mirror show but those who have an inkling about the game won’t be terribly happy me thinks

Come see all five games at Winter Games NZ for probably about the same ticket price. All teams are bringing at least three lines, so you’ll see them skating in the third period too.

…and its stop clock too.  Refs mucking around with a call won’t kill time on the clock <img decoding=” title=”Wink” />

The problem for those who are going and don’t know much about hockey, this could be a very bad introduction to the game, especially with the overhyped promotion it has had.  Someone told me they were scared this could set the growth of hockey back 10 years in NZ.

And for those who do know hockey are potentially going to be very disappointed at what they paid a lot of money for.

This is my concern about what will happen a few weeks from now. Not that the hockey won’t be average – that I expect from the numbers and players that are now coming. People who know hockey well won’t be impressed. It’s the thousands of people that don’t know hockey – if it’s so bad that they can tell… our sport has been screwed. We’ve all worked too hard making slow steady progress to have someone take it away.
