I just heard a rumour that our very own Paul Roth[/url:3e1aeqwn] was the coach for Canada this evening. Not sure how reliable that rumour is though.
August 3, 2011 at 11:49 am #10550vpatrolMemberi heard usa
August 3, 2011 at 12:17 pm #10551imported_RyanMemberOops, that makes sense too considering he’s from there.
August 3, 2011 at 10:12 pm #10552Azzy77ModeratorYeah that makes a whole lot of sense, that a local man that is from USA coaches the “national” team.
So the ODT let Douglas Webber write the article apparently.
http://www.odt.co.nz/sport/ice-hockey/1 … pectations
Graeme makes 10 saves in 2 periods hailed a hero.
I heard that the game lacked natural intensity, and the players were just going for glory passes for most of the game. But the last 2 minutes looked like real hockey, but by that stage my source was bored.
Probably the best players ever to play here, but if you take out game intensity who cares?
August 3, 2011 at 10:36 pm #10553ActiveMemberHmm. 20,000 plus people who had never seen ice hockey before, unprecedented exposure for ice hockey dovetailing nicely into the winter games matches, sell out games, people who have never seen ice hockey before going along to watch NZ soon because they couldnt afford get a seat at the “Canada vs USA” game. Douglas Webber making shitloads of money, what can I say.
I met Douglas Webber and he was egotistical, arrogant, thick skinned, hardworking, self promoting, visionary, driven and sucessfull, I liked himAugust 3, 2011 at 10:51 pm #10554Azzy77ModeratorYou missed out “liar”.
But yeah I guess we see if this exposure works.
August 3, 2011 at 11:31 pm #10555KyleMemberPaul Roth was in the team USA bench. How much coaching he did…
August 4, 2011 at 1:12 am #10556Paul RothMemberYep, I was Team USA’s coach. My oratorical skills enabled me to deliver a Herb Brooks style speech after the second period, and that must have fired up the boys to come through to beat Canada 7-6.
August 4, 2011 at 3:47 am #10557Azzy77ModeratorSince I didn’t actually attend this event it would be inappropriate for me to judge it. Anyone on here actually go, report?
August 4, 2011 at 4:38 am #10558ActiveMemberI spoke to someone at lunch who saw hockey for the first time. Said it was fun, highly skilled, fast, too many american voices saying too much during the game, it lacked emotion but has now decided to watch NZ play in two weeks time
August 4, 2011 at 5:30 am #10559keithMemberHi all you guys, if you want to know anything about the CANADA USA game you should have asked me I work for Craig, and along with all the game information I have been pissed off with the attitude and miss informed crap I have read and heard around our members and so called supporters.
Straight up Craig Douglas has done more for NZ ice hockey in a week than the bunch of wosses that have their heads stuck up their asses, get real this exposure will get people to see our sport instead of living under a rock.
WHO cares a flying fu.k what they did, it was proffesional wonderful ice hockey skills and a great thing for not only Dunedin but NZ in general so wake up…
KeithAugust 4, 2011 at 5:52 am #10560Azzy77ModeratorYeah credit where credit is due.
This guy is one hell of a promoter, regardless of what you think of his product, he managed to fill some massive stadiums in this country with people willing to part large amount of money to watch Ice hockey.
At the end of the day the fact this was essentially a two week booze cruise for some North Americans is largely irrelevant he did sell it.Whereas trying to sell real hockey in this country for smaller prices, we struggle quite a lot, so I guess we should pick his brain regarding selling our product. Because he knows how to bring in the crowds.
I am still concerned in the underhanded misinformation campaign he used though. But I am sure some of his tactics could be replicated to some extent.
August 4, 2011 at 6:18 am #10561vpatrolMemberThe Red Devils have just signed Theoren Fleury, Eric Brewer, Bill Ranford to a trial contract. They should be in uniform for this weekends game. We also have secured Pat Quinn as a coach and providing commentary will be Hall of Famer Don Cherry (not ball hockey hall of fame). Puck drop at 445pm.
August 4, 2011 at 6:19 am #10562vpatrolMemberHopefully Keith will sign on as a technical advisor to make sure we do everything in the best interest of NZ ice hockey.
August 4, 2011 at 6:27 am #10563vpatrolMember…due to an unforseen hair appointment, Theoren Fleury won’t be in the squad however he has been replaced by Kris Draper
