This was split off from the Dunedin Checking series thread. The discussion is about why women aren’t allowed to play contact hockey.
Perhaps the DIHA should add another rule to compensate for that as they’ve done in the past. The CIHA have done the same thing. It’s a retarded rule anyway.July 7, 2009 at 4:17 am #12434ChrisMember"Ryan":xbiyxw38 wrote:Perhaps the DIHA should add another rule to compensate for that as they’ve done in the past. Does anyone know what the justification for the rule is? I’ve never been clear on that.

[/quote:n5te6qjy]No idea. I think a bunch of little boys are just scared to be beaten by girls and so instituted a rule to stop them.
July 7, 2009 at 4:56 am #12436KyleMemberIt’s an IIHF rule.
If I was to get up in arms about a rule, I wouldn’t pick that one, I’d pick the fact that women can’t play contact against each other. Different rules for mixed sports isn’t unusual.
July 7, 2009 at 5:14 am #12437MaccaMemberCan I suggest if you want to debate the IIHF rules that you start a new topic, this is for those wanting to play in a checking series, potential people may not want to read though all of the above and may miss out if they dont

To be honest I think that’s quite unlikely. between players of comparable skill, women are unlikely to physically dominate men. An example would be Kara vs Myself. Similar level of hockey skill (Maybe?) but somehow the thought of her hitting me doesn’t fill me with fear. (no offence kara – it’s just that compared to me you’re not very big ” title=”Cheesy” />)
No, there has to be a better reason than that.

[/quote:bumcsy6c]haha Chris I only just found this…. no offence taken…. If I ever play out again I don’t think I will play checking, with a recurring neck and back injury from the last time I played with the big boys (not checking, obviously)… ironically the two guys who hit me still aren’t much bigger than me….

July 20, 2009 at 10:48 pm #12444thirteenMemberThe reason is basically a liability one. No ref or official wants to be liable for some chick getting smoked and injured (not in that was rhys). Refs find it really hard not to call checking on girls, as silly as it may seem.
Im up for chics being able to play contact though, if they want to play let them. But they need to know that they cant complain because b=someone was too rough. Another option is for the guys to know not to hit them hard, hitting is voluntary, it doesnt ever really need to be done at a low level so when hitting girls, people should go for the angling techniqiue, this purely separates the player from the puck, it is easy and effective and no one gets hurtJuly 20, 2009 at 11:40 pm #12445vpatrolMembergirls where playing in men’s contact league here. Wasn’t the top division but still some decent players. Angelique and Rachel used to play in it. They did ok as far as the checking went. Only problems I ever saw was some dirty old player taking a cheap shot (usually was the over 40 years old who liked their women in the kitchen and were offended that they had to play with girls set). Aside from those idiots, most players respected their presence and didn’t try to take their heads off.
I do recall Bode absolutely leveling poor Harry last year too. Nice hit. Poor wee fella!

[/quote:2a691334]To me, that is the biggest argument against having mixed contact. It seems to me that having some players who you have to be careful about hitting would make for an unbalanced game. Women trade size and strength for (often) speed and maneuverability. If men are unable to use their physical advantage when hitting, then women, who have no comparable handicap, effectively gain an advantage because of their sex. That doesn’t seem to me to be a good idea.
