Dammit. I had a busy weekend with my son’s birthday and family down, so I completely got to call my picks. For the first time in ages!
Anyway, I probably would have picked 6-2 maybe for the Beasts over the Bears, so that was close (6-3 in the end?), and 4-3 to Johnnies over Kings (finished up 4-1 to Kings, so I would have got that wrong).
Kings vs Johnnies was a good game, and Kings have stepped up this year. A little bit rough in points, but not too bad. Johnnies will probably be a bit disappointed both that the they let Kings get a couple of late goals, and that they didn’t get another one or two – they had chances, but Kings defense shut them down well in their own zone and kept a lot of chances away from the goalie. Johnnies defense looked better with regular goalie Leask between the pipes, but they didn’t seem to have their positions on the rink quite sorted, often ending up 5 on one side of the ice, and lacked a bit of straight out skating pace on attack.
I got to play in the bears vs Beasts game to help out the bears, who were going to get a bit of a hammering otherwise. Picked up a goal (and I just want to point out to Jack, who I zoomed past with the puck, your effort was so a slap shot) and hit the upright with another shot. Hellyer picked up a solo effort coast-to-coast as well.
Bears worked hard and got a really good goal when the Patchett kids worked it amongst themselves, and Larry Martin finished off with his first ever hockey goal, bouncing himself and the puck off players. Beasts were fairly comfortable most of the game, and despite some good saves from Bears goalie, took way more shots and spread them around a few players, finishing it up fairly comfortably, but it was a good game and played in a pretty good feeling.
And was that Mr Laing boarding me in the first period? You ain’t got the size for it buddy!
April 2, 2007 at 6:43 am #2220TomMember2-1 to Kings and yeah our team needs help on postional plays no one is ever in the right place on the ice. i reckon we have enuff indivdual talent but we cant work as a team.
April 2, 2007 at 7:09 am #2221imported_RyanMemberNot too shabby by the Bears I reckon ” title=”Smiley” /> I was concerned at the size of Jamie our goalie when I first met her, but she’s very skilled and stops heaps of shots. Her positioning is particularly good. Our peewee players were much better this week which helped a lot and Juanita Kinraid was handy at pinning the Beasts and generally getting in their way. Plus of course we had that bean pole who sunk a puck in the net which helped somewhat ” title=”Tongue” />
The Beasts need to sort out their defense a little, they were a little too easy to break through. I’m not normally particularly good at skating from goal line to goal line but I managed it a few times last night with ease. Hopefully that gets sorted before I play for them in the Easton Cup on the weekend!
Ryan,
April 2, 2007 at 1:18 pm #2222KyleMemberBean pole? Whatever short stuff.
Yeah that was my conclusion about the Beasts after the game. Probably not enough skating speed I thought. They’ll get ripped to shreds in the weekend if they can’t sort that out better with better cover on the defense and maybe a bit more commitment in shutting players down.
April 2, 2007 at 11:39 pm #2223ChrisMemberI think we were all pretty disappointed with that game. We had one or two good plays, but our passes just didn’t connect (I was probably the worst culprit!) and we were slow as hell. Admittedly, I’d had about an hour’s sleep that whole weekend, but we were still shabby as.
The members of our team who showed up for Bode’s practice last night did really well, so hopefully that was just an off-game.
P.S. Kyle is less of a bean-pole, and more of a skyscraper on skates.
April 4, 2007 at 4:16 am #2224KyleMemberA grade goalies:
I’m starting to think about the push for getting A grade players to sign up for the dihl, which starts in 3 weeks.
I’m just thinking about goalies who can play A grade. Toby, Nick, Aaron, Tony. That’s only four so that’s cutting it real close – they’d all have to sign up to play for us to get to our four teams. We’ve lost Antony and Mark Dudley from last year.
Anyone else know of any goalies lurking around that we could hit up to play?

Ryan,[/quote:auvde4ul]She did great in net. Here’s a pic of her with pops between periods.

April 4, 2007 at 6:43 am #2228ChrisMemberHey Joe, were you the guy with the mean looking camera I saw on sunday night?

It’s pretty dark in there, I’m going to see if the lights over the curling rink help. My candids are fine but I couldn’t get the shutter speed I need for the action shots.

April 4, 2007 at 10:25 am #2230Azzy77ModeratorHey joe, there are three phases of light above the hockey rink, normally they only turn on the first set, which is quite dark, when me or toby are playing we normally turn on the second set it helps us goaleis see the puck better, and i think shouldbe fine for photos, but there is even a third phase of lights that needs a key to be turned on, that were installed for the purpose of professional photography or filming on that rink, so just ask them to turn more phases of light on hope that helps
April 4, 2007 at 10:30 am #2231JoeMemberHere’s an action shot….

Azzy, I had the third set of lights on! Also, as the game progresses the light quality diminishes because there is less reflection.
April 4, 2007 at 12:21 pm #2232imported_RyanMemberExcellent photos Joe, keep them coming ” title=”Smiley” />
That guy in red looks particularly stylish ” title=”Tongue” />I was going to suggest you uploaded them directly to this site, but something has screwed up recently (presumably to do with changing hosts) and I can’t seem to allow users to upload anything larger than about 30 kB now ” title=”Sad” />
I’d particularly like a high resolution version of the pic of me you posted, feel free to email it to webadmin@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi, thanks.
What sort of lens are you using for those pics?
cheers,
RyanApril 4, 2007 at 12:49 pm #2233imported_RyanMemberCan that, I tracked down the original copy at [url:6nqhxll2]http://planb.smugmug.com/gallery/2665112/1/141070389#141070389-O-LB[/url:6nqhxll2]
I’d be inclined to sacrifice some shutter speed for a lower ISO rating. Those pics are a little too grainy as they are now. At least for the action shot of me anyway (ISO 1000!), the static shots aren’t too shabby though ” title=”Smiley” />
I particularly like the one of Jamie you posted above and this one:
[img:6nqhxll2]http://planb.smugmug.com/photos/141070949-M.jpg[/img:6nqhxll2]Thanks for the pics ” title=”Smiley” /> I was getting sick of posting butt awful ones from my buget compact camera. The galleries section of this site was very popular whenever I uploaded new ones, despite how low quality they were. We were getting hoards of people (well, that means about 40 or so) who trolled through a hundred odd pics in one sitting. I’m sure some decent pics for once will definitely be appreciated by our users, so once you’ve posted enough I’ll copy them over to the main gallery if it’s okay by you ” title=”Smiley” />
cheers,
Ryan -
