From the schedule, looks like next time you have a home game is 7 July. Have to see if I can arrange to get that night free to come down and support the team.
[/quote:188l1qra]Ditto that. I was quite bummed I missed out on seeing the team last time. If anyone remembers, please remind me to post some prominent advertising about the game next time here on the site.

May 14, 2007 at 11:38 am #3375imported_RyanMemberResults for the latest SIHL rounds including the premier grade now available http://www.dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/sihl/%5B/url:kz9q8e8z%5D.
Another set of solid performances by the Dunedin teams.
[i:kz9q8e8z]Off-topic:[/i:kz9q8e8z] Does anyone know if the ‘premier grade’ is actually called the ‘premier grade’ anymore? Or is it the ‘senior checking’ grade? The results I get sent and the schedule says ‘senior checking’ so I thought maybe there’d been a name change.

Joe said that they completely flaked on the checking game that was on earlier this evening in Queenstown. Turned up with 7 people, none of their top players, no Stampede players, when our guys had all turned up expecting to play another big game.
What’s going on over there in Queenstown?

And Queenstown made the decision this year that all their Stampede players would play prem grade, which is cool – seems to be good for the grade if all the best players are in it. If that’s the case, then why are the Stampede scheduling practices which conflict with prem games?
June 2, 2007 at 10:23 pm #3379battered_and_bruisedMemberI have my feelings on this but I think this could be a good topic for the new “blog” that I now think I may do for the website.

[/quote:om4txa4g]My understanding is that only 5 qtown players turned up to the morning practise.
And all 3 Dunedin guys turned up, including Stiff and Ryan O’keefe who got no ice time last weekend.
Wtf?
June 3, 2007 at 12:24 am #3381vpatrolMemberBefore the Stampede and Stampede management bashing gets completely out of hand, maybe a couple things need to be said. Yes the weekend training was in conflict with prem games. It was added very late in response to the “raping” we got in game 1. I would be concerned if no one thought things needed to be done after that. End of the day though, the Stampede management needs to worry about the Stampede regardless of scheduling conflicts. Being the long weekend, many players were not around for various reasons due to short notice. Mostly legit, some not so great, some injured. Regardless of whether some top players show up or not, its the individuals responsibility to make their own effort. I came from chch and certainly would like to have seen more players but even knowing those who showed, I still would have come. I have to take responsibility for myself as 1 of 22. I can’t make my decisions based on whether others turn up or not. Leads to a nasty domino effect. Those who did show up, their presence was noticed. We got a practice in that will certainly help those who attended. More players turned up for the later practice and we did some more work. The NZIHL isn’t meant to be a league where you pay your money and you get equal ice time. I have to earn my time just like everyone else. Where you prove it is in the training. It was good that the Dunedin players showed for the first part. I’m sure coach was disappointed that they and many players couldn’t be there for the second training. Natural enough. A coach needs players to coach. Regardless of reasons, its still disappointing. Bickering about ice time really shouldn’t be a part. It’s only two games into the season. First game was horrible so things haven’t settled yet. A few more games need to happen until the burnings and stoning should occur. If we treat it like a bush league, then it will be a bush league. The players who don’t take it seriously will eventually be found out. Those who have worked hard, will eventually get in assuming the practice has paid off and their play improves. Just like any real team in sports, nothing is gifted.
June 3, 2007 at 2:59 am #3382Azzy77ModeratorI wasn’t suggesting that everyone gets equal ice-time
Just the Dunedin boys found out the same time about the practises as everyone else, and they had to travel to get to practise a lot further than a lot of the team, though not as much as you Vince.
And the fact they got no ice time, was not meant to be about it should be shared most of us understand that the coach has to win, and in order to do that he needs top play who he feels will get the job done for him, but rather could have be used as an excuse to yourself (this is merely my opinion, in no way represtative of any other peoples views) for not showing, “what will coach do bench me??”The practises were scheduled late sure, but the SIHL rounds were scheduled two months ago, everyone knew when they were. So even if the players had short notice about Practise, they knew there was a Premier round this weekend.
Surely they would have wanted to play some hockey after last weekend, since they didn’t know about this practise, even if they thought they would walk away with the round (which recent results in SIHL suggest wouldn’t be foregone) they could have used the games as opposed training sessions, to work on defensive patterns and breakouts etc.
Also why did they not schedule training for today or tommorow(given it is a long weekend) knowing full well that Premier round was on Saturday, and indications from Stampede Management earlier in the season that Stampede trainings would not effect SIHL, so Dunedin players had every right to go play Premier roundLastly I would like to reiterate these are personal opinions based on what I know about the situation and not reflecting anyone elses ideas, if they come across as bashing I apologize, they are meant to be rational arguements, based upon information I have, if I am out of line please tell me and set the record straight…….
I realize there is pressure to win for the Stampede, and that it is a tough job being a coach, but I just feel that things could be handled a little better thats all.
Peace outJune 3, 2007 at 3:11 am #3383imported_RyanMemberGo figure, Dunedin decides to pull finger (this season) and actually have a serious crack at beating Queenstown for the first time in quite some while, then Queenstown fails to field a decent team the whole season long – well so far at least. Rather weird, but I’m sure they have their reasons. Would be nice if one of them could drop in and give us the low down direct from the horses mouth though.
Ryan,
June 3, 2007 at 3:13 am #3384Azzy77ModeratorThey fielded a pretty stacked team in the round in qtown a lot of the Stampede boys fronted and we drew them 2-2.

There just seem to be a number of comments floating around, not just on this thread so I’m not singling anyone out. It was a late training for sure but a training none the less. Some traveled far, some not so far. Whether it turns into increased ice time for some or less for others, it should not be expected. Nobody has gotten benched in the traditional sense but based on the few trainings we have all had, one would assume the coaches are going to go with what and who they know in order to execute a game plan, or at least run damage control. Everyone here is pulling for the Dunedin boys obviously but there is a heck of a lot more to it.
It’ll take some time to see how it all pans out. This weekend will be a good test as well.

June 3, 2007 at 1:08 pm #3387rookie19MemberYes Vince, there are certainly some thoughts going round Dunedin about Stampede management and some people are jumping to conclusions. A lot of the opinions people have expressed to me in Dunedin are based on the fact that us Dunedin boys got very little ice time or none at all in the first games for Stampede. Sure, it would have be nice to skate in front of the home crowd, but if we have not yet earnt our position, then I dont feel we should be out there. It makes sense at this level to play your top players, and some of us are still struggling with things as basic as D-zone coverage. This lack of experience at this level can hurt your team greatly. Mabye we should have gone on at the end of the first game though for experience, but its not our call to make. Its just a let-down to the guys coming to see us play when we dont get out there, when they make signs and chant out names of Dunedin players, but i guess one day we will earn our spot and get to play a few more shifts.
At the moment it is awesome just training with the Stampede guys, as they are the elite players in nz with many being Ice Blacks, so we are gaining great experience from the sessions. Practices with all the team are vital. So for a team playing what would be called “elite” hockey in New Zealand, it should be expected that players attend all trainings and that this takes priority.
However, this weekend us Dunedin boys choosing not to practice in the second training i believe was a fair call. Everyone was quite sure we would beat the queenstown team with who we had already, for the premier round, however it is about more than that to us, as we had already committed to our Dunedin team, presuming the practices were going to be based around this premier round. So we made the best effort we could to attend the trainings, travelling to queenstown for the morning training then back to gore for the 2 games which we had already committed to.
The distance for travel makes it extremely hard, with many of us studying and working, the Stampede practices do not just involve a quick jump in your car, 5 minute trip to the rink for training, it is really a whole weekend for us which is an effort to say the least. The other thing is that the queenstown boys train another 2 times per week together, which makes it hard to keep up with the systems we play for Stampede. It is hard for us to move up the ranks with this kind of disadvantage, but i guess we just have to prove ourselves in trainings before we will get our shot.
Anyway, I do agree with Vince on the fact that there is a lot more to it than appears. But naturally being in Dunedin (or Chch) makes it hard to keep up and play for a team based mainly in Queenstown. I know if Jackie and Steve were not so kind and generous, theres no way i could afford to drive to queenstown for trainings.
Playing for the team is amazing though, we will keep working and doing our best to earn as much ice time as we can.
Peace all,

And yeah, there’s always two sides to a story. That and people make mistakes … which apparently I’ve done yet again as I just realised I still haven’t remembered to post those stats that Aaron sent ages back! Sorry Aaron
