Does anyone have any goss. on the teams entering the Easton Cup this weekend?
I received the following schedule via my team manager, but I’m assuming that’s just some sort of provisional one as it’s not posted on the DIHA site yet.

Cost/team $750
Games are 3 x 15 minute periods running time.
2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. From what I’ve heard, the Mackenzie Bull Tahrs are short a few players but are looking to recruit some imports from other clubs to bolster their ranks and the Christchurch Jagr Bombs are apparently made up of a large proportion of the Christchurch Red Devils squad.
I also heard a rumour that Steve Jackson was forming a team and I’m guessing that’s the Dunedin Penguins.
It’s pretty clear what the Dunedin womens team is and the Dunedin SK8 team is run by Callan McLauglin (and is the team I’m on). I’m guessing those will be the two weakest teams in the tournament.
I haven’t heard anything about the Christchurch Rangers.

Penguins is a quasi-Thunder team. Tom Wilson is organising it. Has a few players from out of Dunedin (possibly NZ U18s?).
Dunedin women is mostly Dunedin women, some women from elsewhere.
May 5, 2010 at 5:08 am #15330imported_RyanMemberSad to see Gore not fielding a team. A Queenstown team would be nice too.
The standard sure has shot up somewhat from the last time I competed.

May 5, 2010 at 5:20 am #15331Azzy77ModeratorWord on the street is after the Capitals got knocked out of playoffs, Ovechkin inquired about playing on the Tom Terrors team. But being a lifelong Crosby fan tom rejected him outright.
May 5, 2010 at 6:00 am #15332ActiveMemberStefan was looking for a team to play in
May 5, 2010 at 7:49 am #15333KyleMemberStefan needs to talk to the teams. There’s no club constructed team of randoms, so teams need to accept a player for them to find a slot.
(Also, he’ll need to cough up some money that he owes the club ” title=”Tongue” />)
May 5, 2010 at 6:33 pm #15334Rhys MMemberMaybe if easton cup was advertsied more in advance like it has been in previous years you wouldve had attendances like a few years ago,
May 5, 2010 at 8:20 pm #15335vpatrolMemberI’ve known about it for many weeks now due to the advertising plus its an annual event so that makes it easy to remember when its coming up
May 5, 2010 at 10:17 pm #15336Paul RothMemberPeople I’ve talked to have no idea who is organising the various teams or who to contact in order to play, so they don’t know how to participate in this tournament.
There might be wider participation in this tournament if it was known in advance what teams there are, or who is organizing a team. As it is, it is who you know (or who knows you?)
A call for teams isn’t the same as a call for players.
I guess it is a chicken & egg situation: Easton goes by team entry, but if a player doesn’t know of any teams, they aren’t going to end up playing.
So is there some central information point where one can find out what teams need players? Not that I plan to play, but I there are about 6 players I know of looking for a team…
May 5, 2010 at 10:47 pm #15337KyleMemberThey need to contact Larry, adult@dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi. And two days before the tournament is leaving it a bit late, entries closed last week.
And six players is the basis for another team, no one is going to take that many players. But Larry will put their names around the teams and if one wants another player or two they might find a slot.
We need to remember that Easton Cup isn’t a social hockey league like DIHL where we will organise people into teams. It’s a competitive SNC tournament. People need to enter their existing teams or build an Easton Cup team themselves. For that very reason there is no individual entry form and no call for players, just a call for teams.
If someone from Dunedin had offered to put together a team of randoms and manage it, that would have been good and the club would have advertised that fact and sent people their way, but people need to take some responsibility for themselves if they don’t want to miss out.
May 5, 2010 at 11:03 pm #15338Paul RothMemberMy post might be two days before the competition, but even last week, two weeks ago, three weeks ago, etc no one out of the loop knew what teams were being organised or who was organizing them. Anyway, it wasn’t up here or on the DIHA website.
As for entering existing teams, SK8 was an existing team in the prems, but it seems the SK8 Easton Cup team is differnet from that team (or at least not all SK8 players were informed there was to be a SK8 team in the Easton cup).
May 5, 2010 at 11:18 pm #15339vpatrolMemberI agree with Kyle. Team entries are not obligated to solicit spots to casuals. If casuals want to play, they should be pro-active and ask questions. The forum would have been a good place to start. Or they can organize their own team. It’s not up to tourney organizers to form a team and place casuals on it.

[/quote:218kc6b2]It was posted to the DIHA web site here on 8 April: http://dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/easton-cup-2010/
All members should have received the April newsletter on 26 April (which mentioned it), which is also reposted here: http://dunedinicehockey.hellyer.kiwi/april-2010-newsletter/
(The prems teams only existed for the length of the competition, though again, anyone from one of those teams could organise one of them into the Easton Cup, the SK8 team in the Easton Cup doesn’t really relate to the prem team).
May 5, 2010 at 11:26 pm #15341Paul RothMemberBut “casuals” are only casuals because no one asked them to play on a team and they didn’t know who was organizing a team.
As so with so much else in life, I guess it is who you know …. if you’re in, you’re in, and if you’re not, you’re just a “casual” …
May 5, 2010 at 11:31 pm #15342vpatrolMemberWhy do they need to be asked? Why do they need to have their hand held? I’m sure there are easily accessed email addresses on the DIHA website that they could have written to. I’m sure Kyle would not have ignored emails if they were sent to him. I have a feeling they weren’t sent to him or others.
So if someone wants to claim they are being marginalized for not being in the right circles but made no attempt to let their availability be known, then their problem.
