At the risk of opening myself for public ridicule and derision I feel it is time this forum had this thread.

We have all had them and if you haven’t you are lying or haven’t played the game long enough. Those moments where you want to stand on the ice and let the Zamboni take you with the old ice. Be it injuring yourself during a check, scoring on your own net, passing directly to the opposition etc….
The idea of this thread is to put your hand up and say yip I was a muppet, and let people find humour in your misfortune.

So I will get the ball rolling with one that will take a lot of beating.
Back in the days when the university games included ice hockey, I travelled to ChCh to compete as a goalie
The play was developing as any other the forward coming through the neutral zone puts a dump in and proceeds to chase our defense is following it around.
I watch the puck come down beside me along the boards as it enters the corner, it would appear to be following the boards nicely, it is not moving with a lot of pace so I decide to take my sweet time getting across the net as it looks like the d-man will reach it and set up behind the net I turn my head to see why he hasn’t come out with it yet I feel a small bump on my skate and the ref blows his whistle to indicate a goal has been scored.

What had happened I inquired to my very angry looking D-man, it turns out as the puck was traveling nicely along the back it had hit something on those plush canterbury boards and squirted out front and as I was kind of moving towards the other post, when it hit my skate there was a lot of room for it to enter the net.

No matter how dark people say the canterbury rink was I could not find a corner dark enough to hide my shame. However I have never ever been lazy or stopped watching the puck as it rounds the boards since, so I mark it down as a good learning experiance too bad it happened in a game and not during practise…..

I hope I am not alone with my tale of woe

Yup, guess goalies are prone to more ‘errors’ than most would freely admit. I have seen a goalie misunderstand the referees delayed penalty signal and head to the bench only to find that his team was being penalised!! Luckily, the other team couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat!

I am not going to count up the number of own goals I have scored … it may be more than actual goals

No one asked you to count them Ryan maybe just elaborate on some of the best ones…..

Goalies are prone to memorable embarrassing mistakes, because they are the only mistakes that get put on the scoresheet.
Apart from own goals I suppose but they are awarded to the last offensive player to touch it.

I’ve had a few moments, but one time I recall getting into the penalty box and sitting there for a few minutes before realising the ref had actually called icing…

In my defence, I was so used to being called by Phil for lightly brushing against other players that going to the box was starting to become a muscle-memory habit!

I think during one of the DIHLs. I know I was playing for the Beasts at the time. It was… well, a minties moment

I think it was about 1987 in my first year of goalie. On route to a 24 to 0 loss to some team off a native indian reserve, I stopped a puck with a nice glove save. Immediately after stopping the puck, I lost balance, slipped and fell backwards into the net. Goal. Whistle finally blew.

goalies peak at 35………………….assuming they played and trained at the elite level up to that age……………………..I’m in trouble.

I had one in inline recently this year. I had to play goal because at the time, no one else wanted to play. So it was my third game in and we were going very well, considering I was in net. We were up 11-9 at this point and I was getting a bit cocky. So I would do the occasional wonder out of the net to get the dump in pucks. Well with about 5 minutes to go in the game, the other dumps the puck into the zone from their blue line and it was sailing through the air heading wide of the net. But because I was feeling pretty good about my play, I desided to go out to play it. It deflected off me helmet and into the net. The ref skated up to me laughing when he got the puck out of the net. Needless to say, I don’t wonder anymore.
