Did anyone else notcie this years Erewhon Cup is played over 2 days instead of the normal 3?
It means that the day has to start quite a bit earlier on Saturday and go a lot later into the night as well…But it could mean that all of the teams are still around to watch the final. Despite the fact it means a massive day for everyone, I am a bit of the fan of the format?
It also means that the Saturday night festivities can go long into the night, with out the normal back of the mind feeling that you have to be playing the next morning…..whether or not people rationally react to these feelings, or just drink more to forget about it, is a different matter…
I for one am happy with new format, congratulations Queenstown on making this move.
July 12, 2010 at 2:56 am #15999ActiveMemberIts going to be a fun weekend no matter what format is used. hot pools, altered states and movie stars (oh! hockey as well)
July 12, 2010 at 2:56 am #16000imported_RyanMemberThey’ve started prepping the ice ready for the tournament already. It was looking darned near perfect on Saturday and Sunday. Best outdoor ice I’ve ever skated on.
July 12, 2010 at 4:05 am #16001KyleMemberI think it’s a sign of the social element of the tournament dominating the hockey. It’ll mean that the two teams in the final will play four games on the Saturday, given that you’re only allowed to play 10+1 each game, I can’t imagine the hockey is going to be very high quality come Saturday night, particularly since one of the teams is going to have a 30 minute break between their semi final and the final.
I guess if that’s what people are there for, I understand work is being done to make Saturday night a big night.
The pool splits don’t make sense to me. Should have the Queenstown and Dunedin teams in different pools.
July 12, 2010 at 4:20 am #16002Azzy77ModeratorYeah, But the Quality of hockey is never fantastic on Sunday morning after a big night. At least this way it will just be tiredness, not hungoverness and tiredness that will affect the games….
Yeah that was strange to me too, have one Queenstown and one Dunedin Team in each pool would make sense, although it may be a ploy to eliminate one Dunedin Teams early by way of Tekapo, and ensures the two Queenstown teams don’t meet in Semi’s…
July 12, 2010 at 6:37 am #16003thirteenMemberYea lets be honest, too much hockey on Saturday still produces better games than hungover hockey on Sunday! Good format, but yes why are we playing people we can play whenever we want? surely Queenstown would prefer to play outsiders rather than the same old people they can play every week at social hockey?
July 12, 2010 at 9:45 pm #16004Chin StrapMemberthey are 15min running time harden up
July 12, 2010 at 9:53 pm #16005Azzy77ModeratorOh I said I liked it Chinstrap…
Yeah 4*15 minute running time is only 180 minutes, so just a tad more than NZIHL game spread over a day, so its all good…..July 15, 2010 at 10:51 am #16006imported_RyanMemberBest looking Erewhon Cup schedule I’ve ever seen:

Thank you to Queenstown for organizing an awesome tournament, thanks to the people of tekapo for the hospitality and thank you to that good bugger who put down the bar tab at the pub! you made everyones night with that stunt!July 19, 2010 at 5:27 am #16009imported_RyanMemberThanks Blake ” title=”Smiley” />
Good to see the Bull Tahrs put up a good fight on home turf.
How was the ice quality? I was stunned at how good it was last week. Best outdoor ice I’ve ever seen.
July 20, 2010 at 3:30 am #16010thirteenMemberThe ice itself was beautiful and hard, very fast. But difficult to see the puck on as it was dark ice
