October 22, 2009 at 11:08 pm #14654Azzy77ModeratorYou guys realise that the 4 game suspension is an urban myth?
There was a fight in NZIHL this year were neither player received a suspension.
October 22, 2009 at 11:40 pm #14655imported_RyanMemberI’ve heard that myth and never understood it since I couldn’t find it anywhere in the NZIHL rules (or constitution or whatever that big document they have is called).
I assumed there was some document I didn’t have access to which had it in it.
October 22, 2009 at 11:52 pm #14656thirteenMemberthey keep telling it to us at the start of the season

[/quote:htbqg8wo]I understand there was a technicality which led to a disciplinary hearing not going ahead. But if it was a fight, and then it was a game misconduct, I doubt they go to disciplinary hearings. Some leagues only send Match penalties to a hearing, Game Misconduct you just miss a game if it happens near the end of the game. DIHA any game misconduct or match penalty goes to a hearing, helps iron out inequities that happen on the ice (like a referee giving a game misconduct for eye gouging, which is certainly a match penalty).
There’s no standards that I’m aware of in the NZIHL for bans for various activities. The only standards I’ve ever seen in NZ ice hockey is AIHA. They have a disciplinary schedule on their web site under admin which includes standard bans for various things.
The NZIHL hasn’t got its post-match discipline working very smoothly. There was a player who played a period against the Thunder, despite the fact that he should have been serving a game ban. No official notice had been given so the team claimed not to know. So he missed the rest of that game, and the goal he assisted on in the first period was wiped (yes that is messy).
October 24, 2009 at 1:21 am #14658jamrockMemberfighting shouldn’t be punished in the nzihl unless its a 5minute penalty.
I love it and it makes the game interesting, seeing fighting on ice is quite cool and taking part is also fun.
October 24, 2009 at 2:38 am #14659thirteenMemberyea we had that little scuff up in chch when one of our forwards thought your goalie punched him in the face, it was a terrific bunch of fun. even though i think noland dislocated my shoulder

[/quote:2tjclge1]this would involve the nzihl not using the iihf rules, which is a pretty big change. even if the players wanted it I doubt the referees would agree to do it.

The NZIHF tends to be stricter than international rules, not more relaxed, particular where safety is concerned ie: compulsory mouthguards etc.October 24, 2009 at 9:49 pm #14662thirteenMemberha compulsory mouthguards! that doesnt really get policed. now that is a rule that needs to be removed. mouthguards do next to nothing anyway. i never police that rule when im reffing. its absolute rubbish. oh and according to paul scott, the nzihl is non checking, or thats what he infers by the way he refs at least

[/quote:2mlulu28]Apparently that is not true at all. They’re supposedly the best way to prevent head injuries (apart from helmets obviously) according to people I know who have claimed that they’re knowledgeable about such things.
Having said that, I generally avoid wearing them whenever possible as they’re icky, gross and annoying. I’d normally not wear shoulder pads for non-checking hockey either except I dislocated my shoulder about 20x so figured I should probably stay on the safe side. …. you would think my experience with not wearing safety equipment for my shoulder would encourage me to follow the advice about mouth guards, but apparently not! Hopefully my brain doesn’t get mooshed ” title=”Tongue” />

[/quote:2xwa4c2z]You’re both right. Commercial mouthguards do virtually nothing, and are barely worth wearing. They’re better than nothing, but they’re icky and gross as Ryan says.
However, a properly made mouthguard which has been constructed by dental technicians specifically for you, and is in excess of 3.5mm in thickness is definitely worth wearing. Such mouthguards aren’t icky or gross, because they conform precisely to the shape of your teeth. Not only to they protect your upper teeth from direct injury by a puck, they prevent hits to the jaw from knocking you out or damaging your neck.

[/quote:18ydhj3r]i am the goalie.
and yeah i pushed him off the puck when i was covering it and that caused him to come at me and then the fight ensued. was real fun!
October 26, 2009 at 7:47 am #14667thirteenMemberoh thats who you are. yea you copped him in the face when he bent down. i was right there, i thought it was funny coz it was all a misunderstanding but boy did it set the scence. shame you kicked our arses though!
mouthguards still suck, even if they are dentist fit. i still dont wear one even after i had my teeth broken twice! they do bugger all to stop you getting knocked out, realistically, the only thing they stop is teeth getting chipped when they clash together. crap things
