Given NZ are about to play it is time to bring up the appropriateness of the existing Haka that is performed before each game. Time they dropped the “Ka mate” haka and adopted a new suitable haka. Ka mate is a Te Rauparaha haka ( he was a nasty S.O.B to many tribes)  and not suited as a challenge on ice skates. Whats needed is a new challenge which incorporates using the hockey stick welded as a tiaha (fighting stick) and choreographed to suit people on ice skates. Just a thought but could attract lots of media attention since were on that subject

Wait, we’re encouraging people to use their sticks as spears now?

    Sounds great.

Would other countries object to the Ice Blacks wielding their stick in a threatening manner?

I know the Chinese got all shitty about the Black Cox name, so am wondering if a team wielding sticks like a tiaha might be met with similar condemnation from do-gooders? Could always just respond with “bite me” to anyone who objects of course.

although a nice idea in theory, it’s really up to the team to decide since it’s ultimately for them.  If they feel the benefit from the current one, not sure it they would mess with it.

I think Active is just wanting to get discussion going. Ice Blacks/NZIHF are bound to hear about this conversation if people reading it think it’s an idea worth pursuing.

No kyle tiaha are not spears , they are clubs and yes encourage them to weld clubs and maybe even poke out their tongues at them but its ok because its all in the name of culture. Im  thinking sticks slapped on the ice in unision would sound cool

I think the idea of having their own is brilliant, and i am sure there are many people who would be able to work this through with them.
As to the idea of using their sticks – great! If the opposition is afraid of it then all the better!
War haka (peruperu) were originally performed by warriors before a battle, proclaiming their strength and prowess in order to intimidate the opposition.

If they are unable to perform this due to other teams not wanting them too, this will fire the Ice Blacks up even more (or should for those that understand it’s significance)!
