We shouldn’t be just looking at IB games as we need to develop the U18s and 20s to maintain a Div 2 standing in the future.
The development in NZ has been shown by the U18s making their 2011 Div 2 debut and the U20s should be pushing again the Div 2 status next year with a full squad.
NZ would be a great place for a 10-14 day tour with games in all the major arenas. A couple in each region.

[/quote:16d4gmfs]The U18’s and U20’s players already get to play up a notch in the NZIHL. It’s the U16’s I’d be aiming at as they’re not old enough to play in the NZIHL at that point yet are still the breeding ground for future Ice Blacks.

[/quote:rdivww8g]Or Asia-Pacific.
Here’s a non-exhaustive list of hockey-playing countries which would fit the bill for Asia-pacific or a Pacific-rim hockey tournament:
[b:rdivww8g]Non-IIHF ranked teams[/b:rdivww8g]
Chile
India
Pakistan
Nepal
Phillipines
Singapore
Malaysia
Macau
Hong Kong
Taiwan
Bangladesh
Vietnam[b:rdivww8g]IIHF ranked teams for worst to best[/b:rdivww8g]
Mongolia
DPR Korea
China
Australia
New Zealand
Korea
Mexico
Japan
KazakhstanApril 18, 2010 at 9:18 am #15130KyleMemberYou wouldn’t want to choose non IIHF ranked countries. The other list is a pretty good one.

April 18, 2010 at 11:21 pm #15132imported_RyanMemberI just added Chile to the list (who aren’t even IIHF registered which [b:av69uzrc]would[/b:av69uzrc] be a problem).
April 18, 2010 at 11:35 pm #15133imported_RyanMemberImagine how cool it would be to see teams like this Indian one plucking up the courage to head our direction for a tournament:

You’d teams ranked in the 30s – Australia, Mexico, China etc. Good competition for each other, 2nd div teams.
Bringing India here to play the ice blacks would be a complete waste of their time and ours. In much the same way the Ice Blacks didn’t play the Finnish national team before going to Estonia, they played Finnish club teams. If India came here you’d want them to play club prem teams or maybe nzihl teams at best.
They already have an asian tournament below IIHF World Champs which they play in – Asia Cup.

I would hate to see India play someone like the IB’s. They would get hurt and embarassed too. Having them come and play some club teams would be great for them but that’s not a winter games thing. IB’s playing team canada would be a blow out but at least there wouldn’t be concerns about players getting killed. A new hockey country like India needs to play countries similar in skill first.
April 19, 2010 at 2:24 am #15137imported_RyanMemberI never suggested the Indian national team come here to play New Zealand, that would be a waste of their time.

[/quote:2qbsgjzm]The budget wouldn’t extend to two divisions for starters. For two divisions to work you’d need 8 teams – 4 in each.
Secondly, there’s no value bringing countries that are outside of the rankings system here to NZ for something that is about the same level as premier club hockey. It’d be like $30K a team in flights and accommodation. That’s a lot of money that no one has for no additional value to NZ ice hockey. Some of these countries don’t even have proper gear for all their players.
Most of those teams already play in a tier two tournament in Asia. Paying for them to come play it again against the same teams that they play in Asia (that we’ve also paid to bring here) makes no sense.

What value is it to host a tourney for teams like that then? Especially if NZ has no involvement in it? Sure we are stinking rich compared to Indian Hockey but pretty poor in the grand scheme of things. If they wanted to pay to use our venues, I’ll go and watch the games. Only for support though and not with the expectation of seeing great hockey!

[/quote:29g8xzyk]I never suggested anyone pay for them to come here, that would be stupid.
I just suggested holding an international tournament they could compete in.
It would work a lot better if they could compete against local teams too, but apparently that’s not allowed by the NZIHF. They’d need to compete as a non-national team to do that.

Of course there would be a risk not enough teams turn up, and it’s possible the IIHF has a bunch of annoying rules we’d need to follow to run a tournament like that. I know the world champs. had all sorts of requirements, such as crazy numbers of stat counters and officials and if they were needed for a non-world champ event then it would probably be best not to run it as it would stretch our volunteer resources too far I’d think.
