if NZ isn’t playing these teams, they aren’t really involved. Your original “plucking up courage” comment seemed to indicate they would play us since they already have enough courage to go to the asia tourney.
An invitational team compared to a national team would get you around the sticky points however I don’t think they would come here unless you had 4 teams of similar skill wanting to pay for the novelty of playing in NZ while a better competition is going on amongst teams like NZ, Aus, Mex etc.
April 19, 2010 at 3:45 am #15143imported_RyanMemberI guess it’s a bit far for them to go too I spose.
I originally had this idea around the Easton Cup, but that idea was dead in the water due to them not being allowed to play against non-national teams apparently.

[/quote:1rzhg9rt]Division III world champs received $300K swiss francs, most of which got used. A franc is worth near enough to a US dollar. That doesn’t include all the costs that the teams associate with picking teams, training teams, any camp on the way, and getting to the tournament – those are up to the teams that come. The base money pays for accommodation, food for about 150 people for a week, officials from 11 different countries to fly here and be put up, transport in Dunedin, and about a hundred other things. You increase the number of teams, you bump up all those costs.
For the Australian team that came for NZ winter games, I believe their flights to NZ were also paid for, as well as all tournament costs, accommodation, food etc. That would most likely need to be repeated, the chances of getting the Mexican team here if they had to pay all their own way, for a tournament that has no meaning beyond bragging rights would be slim.
Plus there’s no sponsorship for India playing Chile in NZ. There’s no TV audience for such a game.
April 19, 2010 at 4:47 am #15145vpatrolMemberwell there would be an audience but not in the traditional sense and not the kind that we would want. ” title=”Wink” />
April 19, 2010 at 7:47 am #15146plod16MemberBest plan is to leave the Winter games as is, but play more Aus/NZ games. 5 games over 7. Why involve teams that won’t bring any money through the front door?
Another alternative is to invite all the Aussie Nat league teams (7) and play against ours (5) in two divisions. One played in Queenstown and other in Dunedin, plus finals in Dunedin. There might be some loopsided games but has more commercial sense than seeing India play Mongolia!
April 19, 2010 at 7:57 am #15147vpatrolMembercommercial appeal needs to be trans tasman. I’m still waiting for league winner to play 4th place aihl team. That’s the place to start since the concept was approved already.
April 19, 2010 at 8:04 am #15148plod16MemberWe could always send invites to some of the AIHL teams to come over and play a series of games throughout the SI, two games in each location. Either start in Chch and end in Qtown or vice versa. Plenty of flights and could be cheap enough if the host team billets them.
April 19, 2010 at 9:28 pm #15149plod16Memberwhy make life hard when we could just apply to host the div 2 tourny? be better than trying to get some countrys to come down for an unsanctioned event.
April 19, 2010 at 10:23 pm #15150KyleMemberDunedin may consider that, but I’m not sure we’re in the right place for 2011. Maybe 2012.

The world champs. has all sorts of requirements which need to be met. A non-world championship event would (I assume – but could be entirely wrong) not.
A division 2 world championships round would definitely be cool though. The division 3 event seemed to be popular enough and the DIHA would likely be more organised the second time around so I’d expect an even better turnout of spectators for another event.
The womens world championships would be nice to have here too, but apparently it’s harder to cover the costs for that due to the IIHF not providing as much funding as for the mens event.

[/quote:208rxvm0]Many would remain – sanctioning, internationally qualified officials, accommodation etc.
Certainly the minor savings would be no where near the problem of not having the IIHF or Sky TV sponsors paying for it.

[/quote:3ixerfe0]part of the strength of AIHL teams is the imports. Any games would be after their season has closed and they generally are gone. There are still high quality aussies obviously however it won’t be a complete club team like the north stars but a mixing of a few teams again. Kind of like “team australia” which came last time.
I also expect that they would eventually want NZ to return the favor and head over their way.

April 20, 2010 at 2:29 am #15155vpatrolMemberTheir season is pretty jam packed. It would take some substantial notice and guarantees for it to work. It would be cool if it did work. Anything for more exposure for fans and more exposure for the IB’s to div 2 calibre competition is good.
