MemberHere is a company that has come up with a novel way to get support for building rinks in New Zealand (a country with merely 5 permanent ice rinks and 4 of them past due date – except Dunedin off course).
Blade-Sports is launching a VIP skating card ahead of the construction and opening of the Wellington Arena. The objectives with this card:
– Demonstrates market commitment from skaters to Wellington City Council and to Blade-Sports investors that you really, really want a rink.
– Buys you a preferential and discounted entry to the rink once it opens. Something you will need considering the rush to the previous temporary rink.See http://www.wellingtonicearena.co.nz and http://www.franklinicearena.co.nz
Have a look and contribute in any way you can. If you want to see rinks elsewhere in New Zealand let them know as well…

ModeratorDunedin, Botany, Other auckland one, Alpine Ice (CHCH), Queenstown and Gore…..
By my count that is 6 permanent ice rinks….
Unless Queenstown has stopped having ice year round already….
I note the type of construction being mooted, if i am reading correctly will only be able to be used in Winter months, so we are building more seasonal rinks right?? (based on Canadian endorsement of design http://web.me.com/hendrikvw/Blade-Sport … a-box.html, I could be mistaken however as the writeup on wellington rink says year round, which one is it??)If we count winter season rinks, NZ has got Tekapo, Naseby, Alexandra to throw into the mix, which brings us to 9 rinks.
But yeah we do need more ice. I myself have considered wellington a no go as a place to live solely on the fact there is no ice rink there…..
What is the Blade Sports Academy? and why can’t it be set up in one of the other rinks until one their rinks in built???
What are the completetion dates on some of these rinks?April 7, 2009 at 11:50 pm #10671vpatrol
MemberI was about to lambast the design for lack of seating until I found more. However with no seating between the blue lines that I can see, it looks pretty ill conceived as far as serving the NZIHL and any IIHF events or ice skating events or speed skating events….
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m not that keen or thrilled about the hopefull prospect of…if we all act nicely….being adopted by Canada as an ice sports infant.

Member…with that being said, I’m all for rinks in more communities. I just think the design needs tweaking. I do recognize that one main criteria for the designs is cost effectiveness and semi permanent. If that is the best we can hope for, I would support it. Usage can’t be cost prohibitive though!!!

ModeratorI think I would like to add, I love the idea, and good work on doing it.
But the refence to us as infants is quite insulting, there is a small (granted) but strong ice community already in NZ.
Also NZ has been a member of the IIHF since 1977, so we definatley have a history. We are more like toddlers-tweens in the Ice Hockey world, not infants.April 8, 2009 at 12:25 am #10674vpatrol
Memberand as Aaron and I discussed, the blog uses Edmonton to advocate the rink in a box scenario. However that rink is permanent with a concrete pad which speaks of multisport. The NZ designs are permanent with zero prospect of multisport because its built on a sand base and not concrete. Edmonton has no relevence to NZ.

I’ve seen something like this in Calgary before. They’re kinda weird and I haven’t seen one used for an ice rink before, the one I saw was for volleyball I think.
A concrete base would definintely be a good idea for multisport purposes though. The sand based rinks always seem to have problems and can’t be used for anything else.

MemberActually you can build rinks both in concrete and sand in NZ. The last built two were in concrete being the Dn curling rink and Tekapo. Christchurch is even thinking of retrofitting there rink to concrete. The reason why there is zero prospect of multisport is that there is no need here cause other complexes cater to that and rinks are busy enough without melting there ice or investing in a floor to place over the existing ice which can also be done on a sand based rink

MemberI think a rink in Wellington is very called for. A city that size should have a permanent one so that there are 7 teams in the NZIHL!!! I wonder what their name would be. Wellington Warriors? Wellington weasels? or even the Wellington wind…? So many possibilities.
April 8, 2009 at 8:39 am #10679Azzy77
Moderator7 teams???
There are only 5 currently??
Where does the other one come from?April 8, 2009 at 10:41 am #10680vpatrol

[/quote:3r4ow05a]Yes you can build with both but the NZ proposal quoted is for sand. One of the features of the cooling technology is its semi-permanent nature. Easier to dig up sand and pull it up then destroy concrete and try to pull up the “netting”. Demand for ice in Canada deminishes in summer so some are melted down for inline, lacrosse, indoor soccer etc. The design being thrown around loses many of its features with concrete. Therefore that blog in support seems irrelevant. Multi-sport is just not an option.
