While half the club was away at the Erewhon Cup, the rest of us (well 9 of us plus a few figure skaters) headed off to the Manorburn Dam just out of Alexandra for some pond hockey action!

July 29, 2007 at 12:55 pm #6030KyleMemberA Dunedin ice hockey player was skating on natural ice over the weekend and went to retrieve a puck and fell through thin ice into the water, which was fairly deep. Luckily his teammates were on hand to help get him out, using their hockey sticks.
Which isn’t to say that people shouldn’t go looking for natural ice and skating on it, but be sensible, stay well away from any edges which boundary unfrozen water, check out the ice carefully before you skate on it, and watch out for your team mates. If possible, stick to parts of the pond which won’t be over your head.
That stuff you see in movies about cracks appearing and people having plenty of time to get away – that’s not how it happens in real life. You end up in the water, real fast, and when you try and pull yourself up out of it, the ice keeps breaking.
July 29, 2007 at 10:41 pm #6031imported_RyanMemberI’m not surprised someone fell in. AFAIK it’s been above zero all week in Central Otago and ice has been melting left right and center. Any ice which is still there must have been pretty soft.
If you’re crazy enough to skate on thin ice, at least make sure there are multiple people with ropes to pull you out. Hockey sticks aren’t exactly the longest thing to pull somebody out of the water with.
Ryan,
