Here’s the initial experimental trial run of net cam. Thanks to Chris Laing for setting it up before the game, Kara Ross for the cover, Garth Tyrrell for hacking the cover into the right shape for me, Callan McLaughlin for the SD card and the entire Bullfrogs team for not shooting any pucks at it ” title=”Smiley” />
Get the Flash Player to see the wordTube Media Player.

PS: Apologies to Garth! I missed an R out of your last name in the credits.[/size:2gccytm1][/color:2gccytm1]September 12, 2007 at 11:27 am #6724ChrisMemberFirstly, yes, your ULead thing is clearly screwed re: the text
Secondly, good concept and good in practice. For a good game, this would be a great little tool, as well as perhaps getting a bigger memory card.
Well done!
September 12, 2007 at 11:59 am #6725KyleMemberThe footage is really clear – pretty impressive really.
Wouldn’t it be best to design the box so you can turn it on after the warmup? Can’t you make an on button hole?
You’ve got it mounted underneath the top. Can you mount it on the back, lower down? I would have thought the best footage would be between the goalies legs, and if it’s at the back, then you’ll get a wider view closer to the goal. More likely to get hit of course!

There’s also limited room inside the box I’ve stuck it inside, but I’ll get it sorted by next week.

I was going to attach it directly to the netting rather than the post which is where tonights footage was from. But Chris reckoned the vibrations from the net would be a problem. But I think it would be okay, you can see shocks every time Jaimee bumped the net tonight, but I think the net would calm itself after a second or so.
So I’ll drop it down lower, point it forward and have an access hole to turn it on. And hope like hell that some prat doesn’t decimate it.

I think it would work well not so much as a net cam but a shot cam sitting on top of the cross bar. Just a thought.September 12, 2007 at 11:25 pm #6728imported_RyanMember"Hockeyboy19":38n2pa3f wrote:If you get a Fish Eye lens you will be able to get a wider view.

We looked at attaching it to the crossbar last night but didn’t have any convenient way to do it without it potentially falling out of position. I think we’d need some sort of bracket to attach it to the crossbar. If anyone has any good (ie: minimal effort) ideas on how to do this please post here with your suggestions ” title=”Smiley” />

While that’s a great suggestion, it’s not feasible with the level of technology we presently have available to us.

This might be a possibility in future, but at present the structure of the cross bar makes the operation prohibitively labour-intensive. We’d need to make up a bracket and some clamps, which is a long way beyond the tupperware container and string mechanism we’ve so far implemented ” title=”Smiley” />September 12, 2007 at 11:29 pm #6730MaccaMemberJust a thought. How about taking the camera out of the net and mounting it on the outside of the glass facing the net. That way you can still see the goals and also get a wider view of whats happening in the attacking zone on the lead up to the goal being scored.

[/quote:3otsxpdl]That’s definitely a possibility. Personally, I think that would be a great idea [i:3otsxpdl]in addition[/i:3otsxpdl] to the net cam.
There is also the issue of the depth-of-field of the camera’s lens. It’s not exactly a beast of a thing, so we’d need to run a few tests to get it right.

[/quote:1fdbg0fu]That’s pretty much what I’ve been doing up till now. Except I’ve been standing there waving the camera round aimlessly and zooming in on occasion.
Coming soon to the leading website about ice hockey in Dunedin … helmet cam!
Ryan,
September 13, 2007 at 12:12 am #6733KyleMemberMake sure you stick it on a D player, or a referee.
D player, because then you’ll see the puck coming down towards you on the ice. A forward you won’t see the puck at those crucial moments.
Referee, well that makes sense. they do it in the NHL sometimes.
September 13, 2007 at 12:39 am #6734ChrisMemberRef is better than a D player, because refs don’t sit on the bench for half the game.
Ryan, if you’re serious about doing this, there’s a couple of ways to go about it. I emailed you
September 13, 2007 at 12:45 am #6735KyleMemberReferees also spend a lot of time wagging their heads back and forward to keep all the players in vision, which is going to screw with the focus on a cheap camera I’d imagine. And in two man, they spend half their time acting as a linesman, looking at the backs of players.
I presume you could turn the camera off when you go to the bench.
The goalie would be ideal, but you couldn’t really do that in a game. Too likely to get hit and break and then the game would have to stop to clean up bits of camera.
Bit of half a dozen one way, six the other really.
