“Rise and Fall of the Backup” – A tale of alienation and the constant search for acceptance in the far corners of the change room.  Slightly above equipment manager in the depth chart, this documentary follows the back up from obscurity to the limelight and the eventual return to obscurity again.  Edge of the bench material will make you laugh and cry.

That would be a very boring promo video. We all know goalies just stand in the goal and flail around a bit when the puck comes near. Backup goalies do exactly the same, except they’re on the bench instead of the ice.

The real action is in the gumby adult leagues. The biggest hits and most exciting action is in the lower ranks. Where else can you see two people who can barely skate, line each other up, and then see the horror on their faces when they realise neither of them can stop or turn and then slam into each other in a bone crunching thump on the ice. The NZIHL has nothing on that. We even get spectacular wipe-outs with no one near the player at the time! Blue line – boomf! Ok, Kyle does that often too, but he’s the ref/linesman so it doesn’t count. Yes, gumby adult hockey is where the real action is.

I may not make a back up goalie promo, but it would make an interesting story if we get shows off the ground.
