NZ Under 20s had their first game of the world champs overnight in Turkey, beating Bulgaria 5-0. 2 power play goals, 2 equal strength goals, and Paris Heyd scored a shorthanded goal while playing 3 on 5.

They play Australia tonight. Because there’s 7 teams, there’s only three in their pool, so they want to win that to finish top in their pool. The U20s beat Australia for the first time two years ago (I think).

NZ lost 5-1 to Australia. Play Israel (top team from the other group) in a semi final on the 9th.

You would mean Iceland not Israel

So it is. Conveniently abbreviated to ISL for reasons which aren’t clear to me.

Because Icelandic people call it “Island” … with a little thingy above the “I” (which wouldn’t copy and paste into the post).

NZ lost to Iceland 4-0 in the semis, and lost to Korea 5-6 in overtime (shorthanded) in the bronze medal playoff. Regan Wilson got a goal+assist and Heath Dunlop two goals in that last game. Paris Heyd 5+game misconduct for boarding.

Looks like NZ struggled with discipline and the referees – 49 minutes to Korea’s 6 minutes in penalties.

Refs seemed to have been a problem for NZ the past few games.  Paris had two boarding calls in consecutive games.  Without seeing the hits, sounds like penalty for hitting too hard.  Paris isn’t a cheap hitter.

Playing in a medal game is pretty good though regardless of the outcome.  A good experience I’m sure.
