Strong rumours are circulating that the Aus Vs NZ ice hockey match to be played in Dunedin will be used as the curtainraiser for the Bledisloe Cup  on Sky TV. Its not officoly confirmed yet but it looks pretty good for it.

I think we need the old Don Cherry suit to be whipped out again Aaron. I think it would be great to see you on national television dressed like that lol.

Thank you for all your support (facetious or otherwise).
But I haven’t been asked or approached to have anything to do with it.

However I am not adverse to you guys starting a strong letter writing campaign to sky tv, about getting me the role as one if not all the commentators I do voices and costumes as well.

But seriously I would love to be invovled even if just at a technical advisor/expert comments role.

I believe Blake should write this letter, as his letter writing skills have already been proven with the letter to Gore.

I’ve been in touch with the NZIHF President about the ANZAC ice hockey test.

DIHA will have to provide some support for the event. Off-ice officals, sound system etc. Sky TV is going to take care of a lot of the marketing, but obviously we’ll be pushing it as well. The more people we get into the building the better for the sport (I don’t think there’s any financial benefit for us, I think Sky is paying all the travel and filming costs, so the gate takings go back to them). There will probably be limits to what we can do on the night (it will be tied into the Asia Pacific Winter games so advertising, commercial opportunities might be out). Promoting our various activities, particularly beginner hockey, particularly kiwihockey will obviously be high on the agenda. I know the skating club also want to try and get on the ice and promote their activities.

There will probably be an ‘open rink’ the day after all around the country. So there will be open sessions like we had a couple of weeks ago to promote the sport and provide free ‘try it out’ sessions of ice hockey. We will be running these at Dunedin, the last ones we did were quite successful and led to a few people coming back and signing up for more.

This will all be discussed at the DIHA Board meeting coming up on Monday night. If anyone has any other thoughts on ways to get maximum benefit from this opportunity – promotion, fundraising, buildup, afterwards etc, post them here and I’ll take them along.

Perhaps that ‘open day’ could be a useful time to do the pond hockey idea? That way people can come along and join in without the hassle of needing equipment etc.

One end of the rink could have pseudo competitive pond hockey games (scores kept and winner decided etc.) whilst the other end could be an open session?

    Awesome

First thing I would be suggesting is, lets do another epic lights show but bigger better and way more hard out than what we’ve done in the past for this

The new whizz bang 40,000 $ lights that the rink is buying should be up by then. They arrived in a country a couple of weeks ago.
