so if we have a pro ref turn up, we won’t worry about inviting you Kyle since you would decline the invite since you would rather discuss amongst yourselves how to improve. Man I wish university was like that when I went. I could have just discussed with my classmates what went wrong on a test and we just agree to try better next time and give each other grades. Would have been no need to pay that high priced expert who dared lecture from the front with his fancy degrees.
July 5, 2011 at 11:45 am #16751thirteenMemberTo be fair the refs do a reasonable job, not good/great but reasonable. They have their good games and their bad games, their good calls and their bad calls, they get abused and they get cheered (albeit occasionally).
In todays NZIHL the referees cant just do a reasonable job, they need to do a good job, some referees will freely admit that they could be better, i know each time i ref i try and improve, so does kyle and so do others. SOme referees, though, will not admit they need to get better, nor will they admit they made a bad call. I generally dont have a problem with a ref making a bad call if a) he is consistently bad and/or b) (and this gets contradictory) learns from his mistake and doesnt make it again, or to that extent. Generally for a ref, if someone is supervising this will come after the game, maybe between periods too. With learning from their mistake first comes admitting that they were wrong with a particular call(s). then admiting that they may need help to improve.
I’m not sure from a refs point of view, but from a players point of view the reffing hasnt improved with the 2 man system, i think there needs to be more critical analysis of each call by the other ref at the end of each period, this may be hard for some refs to do and to take during a game but it needs to be a critical analysis, not a friendly teamwork analysis. Or failing that, since we have found it in our budget to have 2 refs at the game, revert to 1 man and have the other ref sit on the side and perform a proper critical analysis. Though this would detract from critical game time.
I have a friend who used to ref rugby in dunedin at a reasonable level, they are all amateurs here, they have a critical system where every ref gets reviewed by another ref on a regular basis to ensure they are doing a good job, and they dont complain about this, they take it as a way to get better as they are striving for the big time. They dont moan about not getting paid (i would if i was them) and the majority of them will acknowledge when they made a bad call as if they dont they could lose their position or be relegated to a lower level. (no one wants to ref womens rugby)
What i would like from our refs, is for them (i realise some already do this) to accept a bit of help from people who know more than them, or to develop a system which allows for someone to honestly tell them where they went wrong and for that ref to learn from that.
Is this too much to ask or am i being unresonable?July 5, 2011 at 12:41 pm #16752KyleMember"vpatrol":2src9tnc wrote:so if we have a pro ref turn up, we won’t worry about inviting you Kyle since you would decline the invite since you would rather discuss amongst yourselves how to improve.
[/quote:2src9tnc]Yeah, that’s exactly what I said:

[/quote:2src9tnc]July 6, 2011 at 5:34 am #16753vpatrolMemberSending a promising official has too many difficulties. For starters, they must be a good teacher who has the ability to pass on knowledge. Secondly, they must travel to our major centers constantly to be able to handle ref development. Thirdly, they must continue to ref and can’t ever quit reffing otherwise the resource is gone. Plus its hugely expensive and we don’t have enough prospects currently to do it.
If we can send a couple refs from each region, Great. Will that happen? No
Nobody has said the refs aren’t doing a reasonable job (well maybe not Kelf). However reasonable it is, they must improve and the current structure won’t allow it.
The Vancouver Canucks are an awesome team. They must improve. Simple as that. Are they offended by people saying they must improve? Doubtful because they are saying it themselves.
Anytime anyone mentions anything about reffing, the knives come out and all hell breaks loose! It’s stupid. Players through their fees are willing to subsidise education for refs but so far all I see is arrogance saying they don’t need it.
List all the protocols you have in place if you want and defend yourselves all you want. Until you can claim to be the best in the world, you should be willing to improve. If you are not, I politely ask you to leave ice hockey and never return. We don’t need stagnant people who can’t see beyond their own noses.

July 9, 2011 at 8:03 pm #16755KyleMemberThunder take our admirals 10-1. Canterbury take out Swarm 1-0.
July 9, 2011 at 10:29 pm #16756thirteenMemberGreat reffing too! What a game! Good stuff Jerome
July 10, 2011 at 7:05 am #16757vpatrolMemberdevils leading 3-2 late. were down 2-1 earlier
July 10, 2011 at 7:33 am #16758vpatrolMember4 to 2 win for devils putting them in 1st. Thunder wins 7-6 in OT.
July 10, 2011 at 8:27 am #16759KyleMemberThat leaves the points table in a not quite as interesting as you’d hope place.
Thunder are now definitely out. They kept themselves in it winning one of the games in Qtown, but needed to take one out of Canterbury last weekend and have Canterbury not sweep the Swarm up in Auckland. Admirals well out of it despite having two games in hand.
Stampede are still in it, though next weekend up in Queenstown is pretty crucial for them against Canterbury. Swarm have the admirals so likely to be picking up 6 points, Stampede need to sweep all six games and hope that either Admirals or Thunder take some points off Canterbury or Swarm. They’re approaching the mathematical chance only stage.
July 10, 2011 at 12:06 pm #16760vpatrolMemberAlthough I’m loathe to say Stampede out of it, I think its a Swarm/Devils final with the matter of location to be decided. Swarm have the easier road. Devils need 4 points minimum out of Stampede based on the assumption that Swarm will win the next 4.
July 11, 2011 at 12:24 am #16761thirteenMemberSo i saw something i never thought id see in our nat league, a player hitting a ref. not once, but twice! same player same linesman. surely that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct?
Note to players: the refs do not know your intention, though they do their best to get out of your way its not always possible. You on the otherhand can see them so have every opportunity, as you are controlling the play, to skate in a direction that isnt directly at them. Dont hit a F*&king ref!July 11, 2011 at 3:56 am #16762imported_RyanMemberI assume it’s not classed as unsportsmanlike unless it is deemed intentional.
I always feel there’s a balancing act between standing static as a referee and stepping out of the way. Stepping increases your chances of getting flattened as you may just step into the players intended direction of travel. But sometimes you know they’re either out of control and about to nail you, so you have to step out of the way. Hard to judge.
I usually referee low level players, so the chances of them not actually seeing you at all can be quite high so I often have to step out of the way or high tail it backwards to avoid getting flattened. At the higher levels players should be more likely to have their heads up and looking where they’re going, but that often doesn’t seem the case unfortunately.
July 11, 2011 at 8:04 am #16763thirteenMemberBY hitting i mean cross checking in the kidneys. The linesman got in the way, the Admirals player swore at him then cross checked him in the kidneys. This player did this twice
July 11, 2011 at 8:33 am #16764vpatrolMemberyeah that should be a suspension. banishment perhaps
