to clarify, these rules have not been bought in but they were discussing it
July 10, 2010 at 2:53 am #15964thirteenMemberHA! what were the circumstances surrounding the spitting incident? ie; who did he spit on and what for??? thats gross, i see he still hasnt reeled in his behavior since his racist comment a couple of years back!!
July 10, 2010 at 6:40 am #15965KyleMemberHe spat on another player. Not sure of the details beyond that.
July 11, 2010 at 12:36 am #15966vpatrolMemberThe “ginger” comment was great. Not sure its racist however!
July 11, 2010 at 9:36 pm #15967thirteenMemberLook, to be perfectly honest i don’t find it racist either, but i thought he was Maori and if i had called him a “darky” or something similar and was heard by the refs i could have got a penalty so i figured it was worth a shot. Not that i ever thought the ref would take it seriously! i figured he would have laughed at the fact im a ginger too?? i would have if i was the ref
July 19, 2010 at 10:51 pm #15968plod16MemberFound this subsection under Rule 505 in the IIHF rule book
2. In championships and tournament games, any player or team official assessed his second Game Misconduct Penalty shall be automatically suspended for his team?s next championship or tournament games.
Guess it will come down to how you define the following words: tournaments and championships!!
It appears that the NZIHL is both.
Wonder if it will then be applied for the NZIHL since we are using the IIHF book?
July 20, 2010 at 9:06 pm #15969Chin StrapMemberits bulshit we are in a “league” not a tourny or championship the final can be classed as a championship game.
I think all in all the refs have done a good job this year and assesed the right penalties, my view is if the ref thinks the offending player needs to sit a game to cool off he will call a match.
Apart from the WAA Cross check to the face, and BSW spitting both which require suspensions all other fights have and play have been part of hockey
Just another thing administrators dont understand about the game, i personally think this year has been better than ever with reduced chriping nothing worse, stand up and fight or play
July 20, 2010 at 9:07 pm #15970Chin StrapMemberI think they should leave the rules the way they are let the refs do there jobs
July 20, 2010 at 11:00 pm #15971vpatrolMemberSuspensions should be discretionary as chinstrap says. I would just like to see all refs on the same page as to the relative seriousness of the penalties. It would be good to eliminate complaints of “canterbury refs” or “auckland refs” making pre-determined calls.
July 20, 2010 at 11:03 pm #15972plod16MemberAre the players in the NZIHL not playing for a championship? We all can play with the semantics all we llike, but from my understanding it will be implemented soon, as it probably should have been done from the start of the season.
What do you then recommend for those players who have already had one or two GMs already? Surely they should be held accountable for their own performance, just as those who have had a match penalty? Most of the GMs have been handed out for roughing (fighting = Match Penalty).
Just how do you make predetermined calls when the refs are the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff? Haven’t seen too many refs skating around with a crystal ball lately!!!
I think that the stats have shown the home team is often penalised more often the away team.
July 20, 2010 at 11:39 pm #15973vpatrolMemberCalls consistent with one particular referee that is unlikely to be called by another referee.

I think what chinstrap is getting at is that this isn’t a IIHF championship tourney. It’s a regular season and not a round robin format. Those rules were designed for international competition as opposed to a domestic competition.
July 20, 2010 at 11:56 pm #15975Azzy77ModeratorYeah the two Games leading to a suspension, is similar to the the two yellow cards in football leading to suspension in the World Cup.
In Soccer, these rules aren’t used in EPL etc, they require a lot more yellow cards before they suspended, because it is a league not a championship like the World Cup. So I don’t think that two Game’s should lead to suspension in the NZIHL.
Is there a list of suspensions for offences in NZIHL…ie you spit you go for 5 games, you cause major injury your out for 2-3 or something, or are the lengths just decided at the time?
July 21, 2010 at 3:17 am #15976plod16MemberI think that you will find that it IS a round robin competition, every team plays each other once at and once on the road.
Also in the Rules/Regs it states that we are using the IIHF rulebook, which rules do you want enforced and not?
Consistency is always a problem, no matter where you are playing the game at the lower levels of the game. You have to reach a critical mass in players, coaches and refs before there is a more consistent application of the rules. Don’t get me wrong, it is not simply a refereeing issue but a player education process as well.
The suspension periods are decided on by the sitting committee. It should be noted that hitting someone with a stick is equivalent to assault with a weapon and that carries 5 years imprisonment, spitting is an assault, probably under the Crimes Act and carries 2 years imprisonment. Personally, it would appear the suspensions are around the wrong way!!!
July 21, 2010 at 3:31 am #15977KyleMemberYeah Paul, but the NZIHL rules and regs have always had specific NZ game misconduct rules in them. The last 10 minutes rule was in there, so we’ve always overruled the IIHF rulebook in this regard.
My understanding was that this change was in immediately after the first half of the league. The last 10 minutes rule was removed over the summer because it was entirely arbitrary, but this “next game for any game misconduct” rule has been put in because the league discovered that they’d bettered last year’s tally of game misconducts three weeks in.
