Gidday everyone. As many of you know, we shot the NZIHL Grand Final. It airs tonight (14/09/10) on Sky Sports 2 @ 5pm. For us to continue to cover matches we need ratings.
So please contact everyone you know who might be even marginally interested and get them to tune in or MySky it. Wouldn’t hurt to have a party at a bar either.
September 14, 2010 at 9:33 pm #16348Azzy77ModeratorWhat happened? I put the tv on at 5 pm yesterday on Skysport2 and all I saw was Southland vs North Harbour
September 14, 2010 at 9:55 pm #16349KyleMemberSound problems apparently, though who knows how that works.
Hopefully someone will keep us up to date with the next couple of showings and they make it.
September 14, 2010 at 10:12 pm #16350vpatrolMemberThe next showings have been cancelled. The sound issues need to be dealt with and then it will air. Hopefully sooner than later
September 15, 2010 at 6:49 am #16351SlapshotProdsMemberThis is true. We got the call an hour before the program was to go to air.
Only a portion of the program was effected, but after extended conversations with Sky we’ve decided to put our best face forward and completely re-record the commentary.
Everyone will be informed as to the new airing dates in the next couple of weeks.

October 20, 2010 at 4:23 am #16353Azzy77ModeratorAnyone catch the game?
I was at work seemed like strange time to have the game on?
How was it?
I will try and mysky the replay tonight.October 20, 2010 at 5:52 am #16354KyleMemberI caught the end of it, not too bad. The main side camera seemed unable to turn to the close two corners.
Commentary wasn’t too bad, but the experts guy didn’t seem to be following the game very well – missed penalties etc.
October 20, 2010 at 9:04 pm #16355Azzy77ModeratorOkay so I caught the First period last night.
I thought it looked pretty good.
Net cam was a good addition I haven’t seen in NZ before, although I noticed once that I bit of Ice built up on the lens. But For the most part looked really good.
The number of cameras was awesome it was good to get different angles.
Although I did feel we changed cameras too often sometimes I.E at faceoff’s I got a bit seasick.
But as you said previously it improved throughout, so I have to check out other periods to see this. Same with following the puck I guess, once or twice we would switch either two early or two late.I thought maybe they could have gone with a more traditional hockey scorebox in a corner. That way giving them room for a PP clock when a team is on PP. Unless I kept mental note of when Penalty was given I didn’t know when players were scheduled to return.
Also when a penalty is called would have been good to get a shot of the referee giving the signal, because the first penalty was a hooking that George called a trip, so would be good to get a visual on the signal.
Otherwise the commentary sounded pretty good I thought, nice wee banter going on between the two commentators.
I do wonder sometimes why people insist on having someone that doesn’t know the sport really well call play-by-play, couple of time Nathan sounded a bit lost, but that’s more from a hockey snobs ears, as far as Joe public is concerned it would have sounded fine.
Also in my personal opinion I like it if both the colour and the Play-by-play know the game well enough each there can be educated debate.
But I guess I also get the play-by-play guy is learning the game with the fans, i.e. asks questions they want to know.So yeah good Job, its good to get some Sky tv coverage for a change. I thought it looked great, and yeah my criticisms are meant to be constructive, so hopefully they are.

[/quote:x5ubezrs]Actually I thought Nathan was pretty good. He largely had the right lingo, and seemed to at least have a vague idea of how ice hockey worked. Certainly next to a hockey expert, I thought he could work well.
The camera people needed more practice working ice hockey games – several times they lost the puck and followed two players who were off the play. And following shots is no doubt hard in ice hockey and takes a lot of experience as a camera person.
And the editing needed to switch to a different camera whenever it went into the near corners – since the cameras didn’t show that. No doubt all good experience for slapshot productions and minor things to work on but a pretty good first effort I thought.
Goal cam was great I thought.
October 21, 2010 at 1:48 am #16357SlapshotProdsMemberThanks for the feedback, it’s much appreciated.
Most of what you’ve mentioned went into our post game analysis of the production and will be sorted out for the future, but I’ll give you a little insight into why some things were the way they were.
Firstly the powerplay clocks, we built gfx for this, but did not use them. The clocks were a real problem throughout, so in the end the powerplay clocks were dropped because we simply couldn’t keep track of them. We know how important they are and will definately feature in future broadcasts should we attract sponsors.
Secondly the camera angles, we weren’t able to set up upstairs at paradise, so had to use scaffolding. The limited space meant this was right next to the ice which created a blindspot. It meant we had no choice but to cut to the corner camera when our centre ice cameras couldn’t see the puck.
Overall I thought it looked pretty good and if we can find sponsors the coverage will improve with dedicated equipment and crew.
Please pass the word around for people to mysky the remaining replays if they can.

[/quote:wylx20go]It should be possible to grab the feed from the clocks, depending on the rink. Our one just has a feed from the controller, taking a copy of that feed might be possible?
October 21, 2010 at 9:15 pm #16359Azzy77ModeratorYeah when they did the Aus vs NZ game they had same problem with clocks.
I thought the same as Kyle, seeing as the scorebox in the arena is linked to a controller with a DIN plug of some sort then shouldn’t it be relatively straightforward matter of linking the two? Even if it can’t directly go to the feed can’t the man controlling have a clock with it so he can adjust as necessary?
Also was there communication between scorebox and comm box, so you could get confirmation on penalties and scorers?
We just kludged it a bit down here, and used the rinks wi-fi and just set the scorers and the commentators up with msn messenger, so could quickly and accurately relay assists, and scorers etc….and if there was multiple penalties…work a treat…October 22, 2010 at 5:54 am #16360SlapshotProdsMemberHi guys,
yes we’ve looked into scoreboard links, they do exist, but then you need the correct datalink software with the correct gfx software that works with the right vision mixer and many of these are now out of date with older scoreboards! Does my head in.
But we will find a solution for this.
One of the major issues we face is manpower, it’s expensive. To make any of these productions viable we have to keep the crew to a minimum. The reality is that the budget stops adding up very quickly when you add one guy for this or one guy for that.
Anyway, here are some interviews that didn’t make it on to TV – http://www.youtube.com/user/SlapshotProds
October 22, 2010 at 7:57 am #16361vpatrolMemberwhat about using the free resources that exist within the hockey community. Not only is there expertise within the realm of commentary and stats and correct camera position etc etc, but there is also many who would volunteer their time freely for whatever position is required.
