There is always a place for volunteers and we will be asking for them, but in terms of the core crew for a commercial television production, the broadcaster and sponsors will always require that they are professional, ie “paid”. This creates expectation of services rendered etc and limits people not showing up or jeopardising the production through lack of knowledge. We have to build our budgets around that.
October 24, 2010 at 2:30 am #16363imported_RyanMemberI think Vince was suggesting having the volunteers there as experts to advise the professionals rather than replacing them.
What sort of format do you want the scores in? I’ve been meaning to write a program to handle the scoring side of things for a while now but never find the time to do it. But a very simple system to transfer scores from the scorebox to the TV would be fairly simple so long as you don’t mind relying on a 3G/WiFi connection to make it work.

Although mistakes are bound to happen in any new undertaking, some of the mistakes would/could have been avoided through consultation/solicitation of knowledge already in the community. Some have gone through the process already and have a wealth of knowledge that shouldn’t be ignored. Especially if the hockey community is being asked to support it in many ways.
October 26, 2010 at 1:39 am #16365Azzy77ModeratorI don’t think its the scores so much Ryan.
The issue is making the display clock match up with the clock in the stadium.During the NZ vs Australia games they tried to start and stop with the whistles, but they kept getting out, and used a lady in the rink who could see the clock, to relay actual time to men in OSB truck out the side of the building so they could adjust it.
This was less than ideal tho, since the clock would jump around.
They did have a powerplay clock tho, which is ideal.I understand the need to maintain a level of professionalism with the core crew. But I as Ryan and Vince say, I don’t think anyone is suggesting letting hockey nuts lose with the camera, or the onscreen graphics, just use them in a sports expertise advisory role.
I know for the NZ vs Aussie games, I spent an hour with the camera crew discussing various things with them to optimise their filming. i.e. teaching them linesman signal for icing/offside so they would know where faceoff would be….
But yea definitely be keen to help in any capacity, so keep us posted

[/quote:lliqc2mj]Wait, you learnt that stuff? When?
Also, did you teach them the new icing rule that we use, or the old icing rule that the Australians were still on and which the games ended up being played under.
I can see three camera men all cursing you during the games as the expert that clearly didn’t know shit.
October 26, 2010 at 2:39 am #16367Azzy77ModeratorKyle well I appreciate your facetious tone.
The only differences between the two icing rules was whether you could change or not on an icing whistle.
Not where the next face off would be. My advice was sound, and I distinctly remember mentioning the change but telling them the aussies weren’t going to play under it.I actually received a credit in the credits, and a mention in the on-air commentary Kyle (if that is your real name) and they the crew asked me out fro beer later as thanks…..
