NZIHL summer would kill or severly maim the Southern contingent in NZIHL in my opinion.
Given well over half the Thunder squad are Students, their playing stocks would be severely reduced.
The cost of keeping the Queenstown rink open over the summer is quite expensive and hasn’t been done in a couple of years.
So Dunedin wouldn’t have enough players and Queenstown wouldn’t have ice. I don’t think many of the Queenstown players would be keen on travelling to Dunedin to play/practise, so you would end up with maximum 1 team from Southern, but more likely no teams…..
I understand the want to do, so the top guys are coming out of tough competition into world champs.
If money was no object, I think ideal solution would be for Australian and NZ comps to run as is, and then in the summer months, IB contenders (+extras) form two teams, one from north island and south island, and they play in new trans-tasman comp during the Summer. With the new kiwi teams picked from NZIHL.
The Problem with putting two NZ teams into Australian comp, is I don’t see the Talent pool being able to sustain a viable comp that people would want to watch, if you take out the top 60 players.
Just my opinions……
