What do others think about the performance of the NZIHL website this season?
I’ve noticed a few things that aren’t quite up to spec I would say.
Game reports have always been skewed towards the team writing it. I don’t like it but others think its fun. It doesn’t always say who wrote it though. The game report from the finals is brutal I think. It doesn’t even mention who scored for the Admirals. Unprofessional I think.
Old links get removed instead of archived. Numerous dead links
Rarely updated as well.
Is it important to have an updated impartial professional website to grow the league? Or do you think it has no bearing whatsoever on how the league develops?
September 6, 2010 at 1:46 am #16246KyleMemberThe finals report doesn’t even say that the admirals scored, just notes the score changed to 2-1 after Swarm got their second goal.
I find the game reports of dubious quality. I would much rather that the scanned the official scoresheet and put it up. While the stats tend to be up-to-date, the scoresheet is more useful to understand the game.
I would much rather each home team had someone unassociated with the team writing the reports. They could be a lot longer and cover the more interesting parts of the game – dubious calls, big saves, confrontations between players rather than just “here’s the details I picked up from the scoresheet” – the sheet can tell us that.
The web site is OK, updates are fairly frequent. Home page needs to be sexed up, crazy that it doesn’t have any photos there.
September 6, 2010 at 3:23 am #16247vpatrolMemberPeter seems to be the only one who submits photos so there is always atleast one Auckland team in all photos.
Updates are not frequent. It can take well over a week for any standings to be updated. Scores are often updated frequently but the rest of the site sits dormant.
September 6, 2010 at 6:59 am #16248nziceMemberCrikey you blokes are a bunch of knockers…
I have tried and successfully avoided writing that a number of times in these forums.. but I couldnt stop myself this time… and arguably I had stronger feelings on other topics …
Would you like to offer your services to write game reports ?
Do the Game reports on NZIHL help the rest of those interested ?
Does Murray Mexted ever make pro Wgtn or Pro All Blacks commentary ?
Has the NZIHL website overall improved year on year ?
The Team lists / photos / interviews etc… help ?
…September 6, 2010 at 9:09 am #16249vpatrolMemberI’m happy to write game reports and assist. I think the website took a step back this year to be honest.
September 6, 2010 at 12:24 pm #16250imported_RyanMemberI don’t think there’s much that can be done about skewed reports. That’s just the nature of receiving reports from the teams themselves.
I suspect the underlying software is what is causing most of the other problems you are seeing. I assume that at the moment someone is manually generating static files and uploading them to the server on each update. It would make a lot more sense to use some sort of idiot-proof database managed system which can allow multiple access to the site. That would allow for much faster updates and for a lot more people to be doing those updates, plus would would reduce the chances of errors with links etc.
Personally I couldn’t care less what it looks like so long as the information is there and is easily accessible. The NZIHF site used to be the best run hockey site in the country, then it was made more beautiful, but it’s never been as useful as it was before as the site is rarely updated anymore ” title=”Sad” />
September 6, 2010 at 8:22 pm #16251KyleMemberActually the nzihf site has gotten a lot better this year. For a long time last year the latest piece of news was ‘Chris Eaden scores over time goal to beat Greece’. Never got around to mentioning that the Ice Blacks won the 3rd division.
This year it’s been much more up-to-date. Squad announcements etc have appeared on the web site.
September 7, 2010 at 12:26 am #16252nziceMemberI’m now confused as to which site you are bitching about…
nzicehockey.co.nz – (the NZIHF site) has had a change of webmaster during the season – and seems to have many current articles and links – approx 10 articles since 1st Aug.
I also notice on this site that each of the National Teams pages has current (and past information) – check one out (check them all out…)
The events page seems to have lots of new information on it – I noticed that the NZ Nationals in Gore (for PeeWees Junior Women) had good coverage – and the upcoming Skate of the Nation seems to be well publicised.
I see that they link to the flickr site and seem to well used throughout the site.
The new Junior Elite league seems to be well covered.
I’m sure that the Webmaster is looking for constructive input and would, based on my discussions with him, welcome input suggestions, corrections and even criticism.
September 7, 2010 at 1:08 am #16253vpatrolMemberI’m talking about nzihl site. nzihl.com. Ryan brought up the nzihf site.
September 7, 2010 at 2:33 am #16254imported_RyanMemberI was using the NZIHF site as an example of content being more important the details. Good content -> good site; doesn’t matter if it’s ugly or not. I haven’t taken much notice of the NZIHF site for a while now so if you guys say it’s being updated well now then I’ll believe you … off to check it out again. EDIT: yeah, looks it’s updated more often now.
RSS feeds on all of these sites would be darned handy. It’s a pain in the neck not having any way to get updates.
I’m just happy that sites are being updated at all. Most websites are made, then never get updated and become a useless ghost town. I’d rather have someone doing a half-assed job of updating the sites occasionally, than someone doing an awesome job for a short period of time, then never updating it again. The DIHA site was in risk of never being updated again because I got tired of it, but thankfully Kyle is stepped to update the site regularly.
