Absolute piece of crap this year, whoever is running it needs to sort their shit out. it still says 2010 season when you open it. F’n retard.
July 29, 2011 at 2:05 am #17003jamrockMemberbump this up for slpshot
July 30, 2011 at 9:02 am #17004imported_RyanMemberHave you volunteered to help out?
That might be more constructive than bitching about it in public.
July 31, 2011 at 11:39 am #17005vpatrolMemberOffers of help were made at the end of last season. They were warmly received and then promptly ignored.
August 2, 2011 at 9:26 am #17006kelf6966MemberYes, its was taken over from us because a better job could done……….
August 3, 2011 at 2:40 am #17007imported_RyanMemberPerhaps we should just build a new website, and hand it over to them? The key in my opinion for the site is to make it easy to update. Whatever system they currently have is clearly not working; I’m guessing because somebody needs to manually update files on the server which is never going to work when you need to have a large’ish number of people with the ability to post stuff to the site. An ability to allow any old nutjob to post stuff to the site, but with a moderation queue in place so that someone can moderate them as they come in would be good too.
We could just put together something simple on WordPress.com like I did for the Red Devils a while back. Seems to be working okay for them, and is very easy to let people add posts, edit pages etc. plus all of the hosting is provided for free, so the NZIHL would actually save money that way (they’d probably want to pay to remove ads, but that’s only about US$30 a year I think).
Here’s a [b:1xyx79lv]very crude[/b:1xyx79lv] site I put together whilst writing this post:
http://ryanhellyer.wordpress.com/EDIT: Oops, I just did the NZIHF site, not the NZIHL one. Same principle applies though. Just a matter of changing the header image.
The search box etc. can be removed from the header, they’d just need to pay an extra US$15/year for one of the upgrades to do that … or the header image could be adapted to fit in with the search box.
Crazy idea that will never work? Or a simple solution to the site sucking ass in spectacular fashion?
August 3, 2011 at 2:43 am #17008imported_RyanMemberThe site could also have a “Submit News” page for those of us who want to submit reports, so that we can help improve the sites content too. A select group of people at the NZIHF could be in charge of simply clicking “approve” or “trash” depending on whether their worth posting on the site or not.
We use a similar method on Ice Block for handling ice reports … https://ice.hellyer.kiwi/report/
August 3, 2011 at 2:48 am #17009imported_RyanMember[b:wo7nrp6r]On a related note:[/b:wo7nrp6r] Can someone please pester me if the DIHA site isn’t totally rebuilt in the next few weeks. I’ve been sitting on a redesign since the start of the year and have never gotten around to setting it up as I’ve become a fat lazy ass.
August 3, 2011 at 3:26 am #17010vpatrolMemberif I’m not mistaken, the website was handed over to Jez Brown or whatever his name is, in order to be rebuilt. Either he is disinterested or he’s bitten off way more then he can chew. Promised videos aren’t arriving and the website has set the league back in terms of marketing and image.
I think your idea is the way to go Ryan however the powers that be seem keen to put faith in those who have no track record of delivering but instead, talk a pretty good game. Those who are keen and probably would deliver, are usually on the outside looking in.
August 3, 2011 at 3:38 am #17011imported_RyanMemberVpatrol – would you be keen to shunt all the content over from their current site into WordPress.com posts?
I can setup the menus, widgets etc.,
Anyone keen to make a new header image?
Then once it’s done, we hand it to them and say “here, we thought your site sucked big hairy balls so bad that we gave up on you ever fixing it, so rebuilt it for you free. Please use it! … and we’ll help you move your domain over if that’s necessary too.” – or perhaps something more politically correct, but equally to the point.
Actions say more than words. I suspect they’ll be way more likely to pay attention if we hand something to them rather than just complaining about it.
August 4, 2011 at 9:22 am #17012cowgirlMemberI actually still own the domain name so um.. go for it Ryan! ” title=”Wink” />
August 4, 2011 at 10:29 am #17013imported_RyanMemberHow on earth did you end up owning the domain name?
August 4, 2011 at 10:32 am #17014cowgirlMemberI presume you meant that in a nice way!
I purchased it when I set up the original nzihl website. I even paid for it this year.. hmmm must send that invoice.
August 4, 2011 at 10:45 am #17015imported_RyanMemberYeah, wasn’t meant in a bad way.
I’m just confused why they didn’t purchase it for the league. Seems like a rather odd move not to own the domain name for your website!?
Any chance you could redo the banner image for it? If you could make something to fill the red bit in the image below, that would be awesome! Leaving the search box and RSS feed link suits me best as it saves paying for the WordPress.com CSS upgrade, but if you thought it was necessary to fit whatever design you thought was best, then that would be okay.

August 4, 2011 at 11:06 am #17016imported_RyanMemberActually, don’t worry about the search and RSS links. Just discovered there’s an option to remove them without paying for it ” title=”Smiley” />
