I think the reason Azzy and I chose Tekapo was for the outdoor classic look. Nice back drop and the rink is obviously of high quality for an outdoor rink. Lots of seating too!
And for a Queestown/Canterbury match, its in the middle location wise.

[/quote:7zsxw3bz]But you can’t change the competition format halfway through the year, all this stuff has been set months ago, ice, transport, accommodation etc booked. You’d have to change it for next year and future years. Which means considering all the possible options, which include a north/south final.
July 17, 2009 at 1:38 am #13001vpatrolMemberclearly ice is not booked in advance of knowing what teams are going.
format is given for a south island only final. in which case, transport is simply a matter of renting a bus. No flight required.
Accomodation is also not booked in advance because once again, you don’t know who will host the final until the final round potentially.
It’s a contingency option in case its a all southern final.
July 17, 2009 at 3:00 am #13002Azzy77ModeratorYeah what Vpatrol said.
The Final is decided generally in the last week of round robin anyway hopefully.
It will be this year to i think, at least who is in it.So I think you could have different options avaliable for different makeups of the final.
Yeah I was thinking away-home-home too.
Maybe Dunedin and queenstown could alternate who gives up a home round each year and tour the region.
Or Since its only a drive each get one home game on their weekends. And have one weekend where two away games are played at gore, tekapo, alex, naseby???
Thoughts on that?
July 17, 2009 at 3:43 am #13003Azzy77ModeratorIf the north vs South game was to go ahead that would be a good game to host in tekapo.

July 17, 2009 at 4:30 am #13005Chin StrapMemberfor serenity maybe but to make it viable for the players and reduce the cost as much as possible cos its paid for by the players it would have to be held where we going to get the crowd not just the die hards.
July 17, 2009 at 4:39 am #13006ActiveMemberLets just make up a tournament and go play in Tekapo cause lets face it we all just wanna lay round the hotpools and drink at the only pub there with hockey on the side. An Otago Vs Canterbury game would be good to watch. Hey I know, lets hold the Erewhon cup there.
July 17, 2009 at 5:21 am #13007imported_RyanMemberI can’t see how anything could be changed for the 2009 season. The rules have been set and I’m guessing that includes how the finals are setup.
July 17, 2009 at 5:39 am #13008cowgirlMemberTekapo is not really an option for this level of hockey – isn’t it still outdoors?!
It’s a wicked rink but I can’t imagine a national league game there.
Would be cool for a North/South game but again there’s the possibility of rain/snow/too much sun/wind….
As for a 3 game final – it would have to be over one weekend and in the top team’s home town.July 17, 2009 at 5:54 am #13009vpatrolMemberit is outdoors. That’s the whole point!
I think crowds are not a concern. They will come.
Plus its just an idea that we are floating around. Not intended for this year!
July 17, 2009 at 7:01 am #13010imported_RyanMemberI don’t think it being outdoors is a problem. The SIHL’s been playing games outdoors for years with no problems. I think the Queenstown and Christchurch rinks are more of a problem since they don’t have glass.
July 18, 2009 at 11:25 pm #13011Azzy77ModeratorNHL plays one game every year outside….in america where the outside temperature is like -5000 compared to our -5 I think it could work

[/quote:375pz706]The problem here is more likely to be +15. But if it was held in the dead of winter it shouldn’t be a problem. Tekapo seems to have fairly consistent ice from what I’ve heard.
July 18, 2009 at 11:40 pm #13013vpatrolMemberrisk vs reward. NHL risks inclement weather. I think we can too.
At the very least, I want to avoid a one game grand final. That is not the way to settle the season I don’t think.
Hopefully if another north island city gets a team (eg Welly), then I think a semi-final would be in order.
