big difference when the winter classic sells around 80,000 tickets if in Tekapo might sell 80 and it does matter cant see the guys in the NZIHL forking out more money to play there. Tickets sales do count, considering majority of players will be Ice Backs who already pay through the teeth and a few extras who would would imagine would be made up of U20 U18 NZ reps who pay for there own travel also, cant see many other players being involved
NHL only do because there make more money from it than regular games and only hold one so it keeps the punters coming and its only be its 3rd year its happened the other 2 others were heritage games

July 20, 2009 at 12:41 am #13016Azzy77ModeratorYou know that if you talked to some broadcaster in Canada and sent them pictures of tekapo rink you might get some 2/3/4/5/92 nd teir Canadian competition played there and get it televised to really put nz on world hockey map.
Even if you televised north south game on nz tv i reckon you could get highlights on Coaches Corner Cherry lives for that stuff
July 23, 2009 at 4:53 am #13017vpatrolMemberwell I think the idea will die a horrible death due to apathy. Status quo it is!
July 23, 2009 at 5:49 am #13018imported_RyanMemberI think it will die a horrible death as I don’t think people will agree that Tekapo is a financially viable venue.
I think a non-championship event at Tekapo would be more likely to work well. Perhaps an Erewhon Cup showdown for the three Southern NZIHL teams?
July 23, 2009 at 10:25 am #13019vpatrolMemberOutside of an official nzihl game, it would be a joke. Doesn’t have to be a final but it has to be official otherwise you won’t get the best players and you will get guys who have no business playing on a nzihl team padding numbers.
July 23, 2009 at 10:30 am #13020imported_RyanMemberI assumed if the teams decided to compete then they’d have their full squads turn up. If the teams aren’t that organised, then yeah, it would be a bit silly.
July 23, 2009 at 10:33 am #13021imported_RyanMemberWhat if there was an officially sanctioned non-championship NZIHL event? Or do you think the players still wouldn’t bother?
How about an All-stars game? Stampede and Thunder vs Red Devils, Swarm and Admirals? Since it would be a long way for the Auckland guys to come, less would probably make the trip, so three vs two wouldn’t be quite so bad.
Or you could split everyone up evenly, although I’m not sure that would be a very popular option. That’s a bit too much like chucking your sticks in the middle and just splitting everyone up, kinda lame.

July 23, 2009 at 8:26 pm #13026Chin StrapMemberif the red devils are happy to give up two home games to play at tekapo the other team will come, but someone has to give up a home game round to have this there.
