MemberYes indeed folks this is going to be as big as it gets. Neil Gamble did a presentation yesterday in Queenstown showcasing our rink to Olympic commitee officals from all round the world. We’re talking helicopters whisking them around to banquets and sites, government officols groveling, Helen Clarke sending apologies for not coming, backhanders all round, Millions of dollars in broadcasting fees and politicising at its highest level. The reason it has taken on such importance is that it now is being touted as part of the world cup circuit ( one of 6 venues world wide). What this means is our little rink will look completely different come next August as it is beamed to millions of viewers worldwide if all goes according to plan. Unfortunately no ice hockey. There is talk of a Australia NZ test series at the end of it though which would be tasty.

MemberAwesome. Pity about the hockey, but not surprising.
It would be a big boost for the rink and city if it happened.

MemberYeah, it’s my understanding that Queenstown will get the hockey, which is a shame, but not too far to travel. Wonder how much the tickets would be.

MemberThat sucks, Queenstown has such shit ice. Why would they want to play there.

MemberWell it’s not all bad because for the Olympics in the Mens hockey, they will be using NHL players. At the time that this event will be held, it will be just before the training camps get underway and there would be no way in hell that NHL teams would let some of their best players go to a tourny halfway around the world with the risk of getting injured just before the season starts…Women however might just happen. You might get to see the greats play like Wickenheiser, Sonahara, and St. Pierre to name a few of the Canadian women’s team.

MemberI was about to add a post to say that Hayley Wickenheiser is retired so we won’t see her. But it turns out I’m wrong
” title=”Smiley” />
Incidentally, she is the only female player ever to compete (apart from the occasional goalie) in a fully professional hockey game. She played a season and a bit for HC Salamat where she scored one goal in Finland before heading back to Canada to play with the most famous of all hockey legends …. Bode

[/quote:3tkugdtn]I doubt Team Canada would be playing in Queenstown. Their rink wouldn’t be up to scratch.

MemberAs I said there is no hockey coming out. Just to expensive, the wrong time of year and not scheduled in. There may be a series between NZ and Oz but it will be held in Dunedin.

MemberNo other rink in NZ would be up to IIHF standard? So dunedin would be the only place to hold such hockey if it were to take place

MemberDunedin Rink is going to look nothing like it does at the moment and when Ryan gets back to me I would like to post some 3D images of the proposed rink as shown to the delegates. Its the Dunedin rink all right but not as you know it.

ModeratorYeah it is the wrong time of year for team Canada and team USA to come
But what about other pacific rim teams that wish to get some hockey underway… in preparation… i.e Japan, the Koreas etc…
I like the idea of a Bledisoe cup style arrangement with Australia gives NZ international hockey between world champs… and as it stands right now against someone in our division….
