Hi,
The Dunedin Ice Hockey Association has organised a session to train some more referees in Dunedin, who are desperately needed. Referees are a crucial part of our sport, without which we couldn’t function properly, and we are very light on referees here.
The training will take place on 10 and 11 March, and will include both on and off-ice work with a certified referees trainer. Attendees get a copy of the rules, and a take home open book test to complete in order to receive their certificate. Costs should be really low as the ice hockey association is seeking some funding.
We want as many people as possible to complete the training course and get the certification. Even if you’re not sure you want to referee afterwards, it’d be useful to attend and get qualified, both because it’s good for your knowledge of the rules and the game, but also there probably won’t be another one for a couple of years.
Referees also get paid in Dunedin, so if you ref some games it makes your ice time when you play free. Perfect for all you poor students who complain about the cost of ice hockey.
Anyone who is interested reply here or send an email to kyle.matthews@otago.ac.nz and let me know, and I’ll add you to the list for more details once they become available.

January 30, 2007 at 3:24 am #2077KyleMemberK, well that’s 2 plus me and Aaron Bryant is keen as well.
Pass this around the likely suspects, anyone you know, we should try and get up to 10 people or so.
February 9, 2007 at 6:02 am #2078TomMemberI want to be a referee but i am probally not old enough (13 im 14 in march).
My question is how old to you have to be to be a refere.February 9, 2007 at 8:10 pm #2079KyleMemberI’m not sure what the minimum age is, but I suspect 14 probably is under what they’d normally take. I’ll find out and post back here.
February 13, 2007 at 5:12 am #2080TomMemberI may be pretty young but i still could learn how to reff like any one else, i live close to the rink and i would be able to reff most games as i have lots of free time.
February 13, 2007 at 10:39 am #2081KyleMemberYeah it’s not my decision, it’s the decision of the guy who’s running the course, he’s from Queenstown and we’re waiting to hear back. I’m just trying to round up as many people as possible, so it’s good that you’re keen.
The other issue is that being qualified is only half the story. Refereeing games, at least games run by the Dunedin Ice Hockey Association, requires that you’re chosen by the head referee. I don’t know what criteria he uses for that (at present we’re so short that ‘qualified’ is the main criteria!), but certainly age and experience would be two of the things I presume he’d consider. There certainly should be an age limit (5 is definitely too young!), but I don’t know what it is.
Hopefully he’ll get back to us soon.
February 14, 2007 at 12:52 am #2082KyleMemberAnd the answer is: Thirteen year olds are fine. Tom can you email me at kyle.matthews@otago.ac.nz and let me know who you are etc? That way you’ll be on the list.
Thanks,
