I Dont think a Mercy 10 goal rule is a good idea at all.  Im sure the kids enjoy every minute out there and and Just to get one goal is a huge sense of achievement for a kid.  Even if he gets beaten 15 – 1 bet he tells all his mates about the one goal he scored.  The Thunder didnt give up when they got beaten 15 – 2 in the weekend.  Bet they enjoyed every goal they scored.  It’s a huge effort to even score on great players like Adam Soffer and Chris Eaden.

I remember when i was young and playing hockey. When i scored a goal against any team no matter the score or the skill i was proud, I think the 10 goal limit is a ridiculous idead, if u can score then you will score and keep trying to score its human instinct. I also think that although thnder played and got beaten badly they would have cherished those goals the 2 that they scored and they would have told all there friends about it, the devils player wouldnt have because they would have probably been bored from scoring so many goals

The idea (IMHO) is to concentrate on setting up plays, good positioning, good passes etc. and developing good play once you are clearly in the lead, that generally leads to less goals landing in the net. Simply not bothering to score is lame.

I recall playing a game in the SIHL SNC grade once where we broke out to (I think) a 10 – 0 lead after the first period. We decided not to score any goals after that, but we still ended up at 25-0 at the end of the game. There is only so much you can do to avoid getting goals without it making a mockery of the game. I couldn’t think of anything worse than having someone be standing directly in front of the goalie and not shooting; that would be very condescending to the other team.

I’ve been on the receiving end of some absolute thumpings in the past (usually whilst playing for the Dunedin Aces), but some of those thumpings were the most fun I’ve ever played. I’m not sure kids will appreciate the fun of keeping a score below 10 – 0 as much as an adult though.

Peewees were in Alexandra on Saturday and beat Queenstown and Maniototo. They’ve got one more tournament in Naseby before their season finishes.

Running up the score on a team that is strugling is not a got idea at all. I never felt a sense of achivement scoring  goal at 11-0 or something like that. Why would you feel proud netting a goal against a team you are blowing out by so much there is no pride in that puck lover or jofa player. Have children focus on cycling the puck or dumping it in and operating a basic forecheck these are the sort of thing that will help produce quality players in the future.

If you’re thrashing someone and you let them have it easy to “even things up”, all that does is rob the other team of any pride in their achievements during the game, whatever they may be.

I’ve been on the receiving end of a couple of monster thrashings, and it made me feel good when I managed to stop that player who’d gotten past me every other time, or get that puck out of our zone.

If those teams had let us have it easy I would’ve found it somewhat disrespectful and definitely unsatisfying.

I think when you are up by that much, it is definitely a good time to work on other aspects of your play. I’ve never really been one for going to practices, and I learnt most of what little hockey I know out on the ice. If I were up 10=0 at the end of the first, I would probably start taking some more risks, pushing myself to do things which I’d seen better players do but had never attempted myself, that sort of thing.

I guess it is harder for the peewees because they are much better hockey players than I will ever be, and so therefore their room for improvement is not so obvious as mine.

For a player like me though, playing against a team where you are dominating would really give me a chance to try stuff that I would never do in a more competitive game.

    Ditto.

I’ve played in more teams that get thumped than do the thumping, (ie. Southern Women in SIHL SNC vs any SIHL SNC team) and I know I felt more proud of my game for Gore against Alex, than I did for my period for Women agianst Alex – when I played for Gore I realised that Alex had taken it easy against the Women, as their intensity stepped up and they were frustrated that they could only score on me twice in the first period – until the second period when they went nuts when they scored 9 goals – it’s a nice feeling to have frustrated a team that is actually trying, especially a team that previously put 20+ past me on several occasions.

Yeah i agree don’t take it easy on the other team but focus on improving aspects of your game instead of scoring. Don’t play your best players give the younger inexperienced players more time.
Im probably just getting carried away because I hate losing and getting blown out by so much hahha. They are just young kids and probably just enjoy playing hockey and don’t realy care about the score.

Some kids care about the score, some don’t. Some adults care about the score, some don’t. I don’t think I cared as an adult or a child … probably why I’ve never won many games <img decoding=” title=”Tongue” />

I dunno about kids not caring about the score. From the kids I’ve met, it seems like ALL they care about is the score!
