[quote:9eteysb2]If it wasn’t clear from my post, I approached the referees during the SK8 game the week before, when they were playing the Ducks, and asked the referees to remind the SK8 players who weren’t wearing visors then that they should be. Why there were people not wearing visors the week after, I don’t know.[/quote:9eteysb2]
I suggest we avoid a flame war with whoever this ‘guest’ person is. You were prefectly reasonable in asking SK8 to follow the rules and I don’t think anyone who knows the details would argue otherwise. It could definitely look dodgy to anyone who didn’t know the background behind what was going on though.
I’ll be sending an email out to all DIHL players very shortly outlining the equipment rules.
Ryan,
PS: this might be the first piece of controversy we’ve had on the forum ” title=”Smiley” />
October 24, 2006 at 12:29 am #1545guestMemberglad I could contribute to some heated debate. As for my identity, well that will have to remain a mystery.
October 24, 2006 at 12:46 am #1546imported_RyanMemberHmm, mysterious poster eh.
October 24, 2006 at 1:28 am #1547JackMemberCaptain Mysterious strikes again!

October 24, 2006 at 3:06 am #1548KyleMemberWe’re in the final stretch, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. A grade is in the final week of round-robin, but the final spots have already been decided by the points table. B grade are already onto the semis, and the heat will be on to see who makes it through to the finals.
[b:1cx9wd1x]A Grade[/b:1cx9wd1x]
Phantoms vs Ducks: Everyone came off a draw last week, so things have really evened up in the competition. Phantoms know they’re going to be facing SK8 in the final next week, but will be looking to steady things nicely against the Ducks to get the roll on. Ducks will be hoping for a second victory, it hasn’t been the happy DIHL they’d been hoping for. SK8 again without regular goalie Nick Metzger, Mark Dudley filling in between the pipes, Hellyer out with a broken ankle from badminton. Kyle pick: Phantoms to take it 3-2, van Leeuwan and Hodge to score for Phantoms, Gilchrist and D. Sykes for Ducks.
SK8 vs Stars: SK8 are clear on top of the table, but they’ll be looking for one more win to make sure that first spot is theirs – currently they’re 2 points ahead of Phantoms, and 3 goals ahead on goal differential, so Phantoms would need to win, and pick up a four goal deficit for there to be any problems. Stars have been the eternal drawers in the competition, with 3 draws, no wins so far. They’ll be looking for a victory, just to see their names in lights. Kyle’s pick: I’m going for an upset, Stars to take it 4-3, Lamb to get a double, including the game winner, Roth the elder and van Leeuwen to net for SK8. Big game by Bryant to keep SK8 out in the end.
[b:1cx9wd1x]B Grade[/b:1cx9wd1x]
OBHS vs Bears: Both these teams are out of finals contention. OBHS pushed Kings hard last week, but fell one short, which means Bullfrogs sneak into the fourth spot. This game is technically the playoff for 5th and 6th. Neither team has had a happy season, but both will be looking to finish on a high note (they both have a friendly game against the losers of the semis next week). I’m picking OBHS to take it 4-2.
John McGlashan vs Bullfrogs: Bullfrogs are really up against it in the semis. Johnnies have been looking the business all season, including a big whalloping of Bullfrogs earlier on. Bullfrogs won’t be so bad this time around, but they’re already missing Hellyer, so they’ll continue to suffer. Kyle’s pick: Johnnies 6-2.
Beasts vs Kings: This might be a closer game, Kings are a bit of a dark horse in the competition, and thought they lost pretty well to Beasts first time around, I’m picking that they’ll come closer this time and put some heat on the Beasties. All the same, the Beasts are clearly ahead of the rest of the pack in 2nd place, and I’m going for 5-3 final score.
Off Ice: Helmets. My life of helmets.
October 24, 2006 at 7:33 pm #1549JackMemberI would like to nominate my A grade team (the Stars) for a special award at the end of this season. It shall be called, ” The Longest Freaking Drawing Streak In the DIHL History Trohphy!”
I hate drawing….. Maybe Gareth is right, I should Paint instead!!!!!!
October 24, 2006 at 8:20 pm #1550KyleMemberagain? That’s four in a row. What the hell is up with you people?

October 25, 2006 at 1:21 am #1552GazzaMemberthen again…
maybe if you PASSED the puck a bit more Jack (odd concept I know)
you might start winning
October 25, 2006 at 2:55 am #1553KyleMemberOooh! Inter-team snarkiness. And on the day of a big semi-final too. It’s all falling apart in beast-land.
October 25, 2006 at 3:35 am #1554PhilMemberThe refs side:
Just to set the record straight, the refs for the SK8/Phantoms game were not comfortable sending players off the ice for failure to wear visors last week as we were not 100% satisfied that everyone had been appropriately advised of the crackdown, and as was pointed out there are also rules pertaining to mouthguards and neck braces (for certain ages and conditions). I’m fully in support of appropriate safety equipment – In fact I research injury prevention and rehabilitation – but these things need to be clearly set out and enforced from day 1, not 6 games into the league.
It is the referees’ role to enforce all equipment rules as well as the rules of the game – we did ask the organisers to stand behind us on this issue – and that all players be emailed to remind them that there would be zero tolerance for incorrect equipment and that a couple of small posters be put up in the changing areas. That did not happen last week – the following week an email went to everyone and we had absoultely no problems with compliance on Tuesday – simple really.
We hope to run a reffing/lining clinic late 2006/early 2007 to boost our failing ref numbers – would be great to have some of you join in, so keep an eye on your emails.
We might be wimps but we’re fair wimps.
October 25, 2006 at 9:13 am #1555imported_RyanMemberWelcome to the forum Phil ” title=”Smiley” />
This all sounds reasonable to me. Too many people making a lot of huff over a minor issue I think. Hopefully from now on the players will wear the proper equipment.
I was talking to Clive Murphie (Aardwolfs club president) last night and he mentioned that the refs up in Christchurch have been sending people off for not having a matching uniforms, tucking their jerseys into their shorts and in their top grade for not wearing matching socks! So I’m glad you’re not enforcing those things, although the tucking of uniforms into shorts would be any easy thing to remedy.
Perhaps the club should look at purchasing/making a bunch of stick on C’s and A’s? At the moment the refs have no idea who the captains and assistants are. Some sticky labels would do the trick, they could be kept in the score box and handed out before each game for the designated players on each team.
It’s a little dissapointing to see that one of the Kings players got a game misconduct penalty tonight. Some people need to take these things a little less serious! Particularly when the infraction occured after the game was over! Although I think the Beasts didn’t help matters for themselves, a little more diplomacy might have prevented it.
Final scores for the B-grade are (I think, I wasn’t paying that much attention):
Bears 1 OBHS 4
Bullfrogs 1 John McGlashan 4
Beasts 7 Kings 0It’s looking a tense finals game between John McGlashan and the Beasts.
Ryan,
October 25, 2006 at 7:19 pm #1556JackMemberThe C’s and A’s can be quite easily produced from stick tape prior the game, maybe an e-mail out to the managers of each team informing them to do so is in order?
I would like to say a big thank you for my team, one moment i was down on the ice from an unexpected hit, the next, half my team has literally piled on top of the player….. hmmm, how would Mark Dudley put this to words….ahh, I love you all!!! and I have eggs for breakfast!
October 25, 2006 at 8:44 pm #1557KyleMemberI suspect anything that stuck on would would quickly become wrecked. And I’ve never seen anything made out of stick tape last a whole game.
The club could, for sets where there’s enough tops, simply choose three tops and put permanent C and A labels on them. If there were no such people, then those wouldn’t need to be used, but it’d be a good habit to get into of always having those people identified in games – it’s another thing that we’re slack on here in Dunedin.
Match penalty? For hitting Jack? We need a fuller report I think. I’m sure people have been tempted before! Was he wearing non-matching socks?
October 26, 2006 at 12:38 am #1558imported_RyanMemberThe problem taped on ones is that players don’t bother in my experience. Some simple stickers would be easier and (I think) should last a game. Plus they’d probably be cheaper than using stick tape.
