The Bullfrogs are actually looking fairly strong. Hopefully Becky Brassett will be back in net (she was back last week too) and Rob Wadell has replaced me on the defensive line.
Ryan,
October 31, 2006 at 10:42 am #1575KyleMemberBased on these two pieces of information I’m going to reverse my decision. Bullfrogs 4-2.
PS: Phantoms!!!
October 31, 2006 at 11:05 pm #1576KyleMemberA grade played a big finals night last night. There was a hum in the air, the crowd was about four times its normal size (that’s maybe, 40 people!), and absolutely no Channel 9 at all (some sort of wrong day confusion seemed to afflict the entire evening).
Stars played the Ducks for 3rd place. Ducks were well in it until about half time. Backup goalie Mark Dudley played a blinder in goal for the first period, stopping a bunch of really good shots, and kept his team in it. The Ducks even took the lead briefly early in the second period, before the Stars finally started to find holes in the Ducks goalie, and the floodgates started to open, leaving it as a final score of 6-1. The Stars had a devastating line of Peter Lamb, Simon Christos, and Aaron Benda, who were causing all sorts of havoc. The Ducks not having Stampede player Duncan Sykes on defense didn’t help either, and I’m not sure I saw Mike Sam there as well. Anyway, well done to the Stars for clocking up their first victory of the DIHL.
The big final was up next, but there was chaos in the changing room with half the SK8 team not there, including goalie Tony Pasco. Some sort of confusion about what day the final game was on. A flurry of text messages were sent, and gentle persuasion kept Stars goalie Aaron Bryant in gear to cover for goal, and both squads spent a good six or seven minutes off the rink waiting for the ice to freeze – and when we went on there were still puddles. A long warm-up – the referees and scorekeepers were clearly taking this game with utmost seriousness. Phantoms lineup had been strengthened not only by the addition of Larry Wheeler, but also a second Larry, who’s recently moved here from Queenstown and mysteriously appeared on the ice in a Phantoms top. SK8 picked up Rane Phipps-Black who changed over from his Ducks top to help out an SK8 team who were looking like being short.
The game was played at a really high tempo, and Phantoms let in an early goal when Dudley failed to cover up a stopped shot, and an SK8 forward skated through and knocked it between his pads. A second goal went in later in the first period, by more traditional means. Phantoms had plenty of shots in the period, but consistently found the centre of netminder Bryant’s chest pads.
Phantoms came out firing in the second period, with van Leeuwen netting while in the process of falling down on the breakaway, off an assist from Matthews. The floodgates really started to open when the Phantoms went on powerplay however, and Hodge netted.
Third period the Phantoms stacked up three more goals, all to Hodge, at least one again with the man advantage. There was some really good puck control and heaps of pressure in the SK8 zone, which eventually led to goals. SK8 had a couple of good attempts at getting one back, but were unable to, including a penalty shot taken by Hey, which was called off as he lost control of the puck. Some big saves by Dudley, who found true A grade form in net.
The game got pretty ugly in the final period, with Wheeler and Roth the younger set off for roughing in front of the SK8 net, and a second SK8 player put in for five minutes for being the third man in. Then Wick and van Leewen tussled at a faceoff, and it was all fists flying as they both really went at it. Both were deservedly sent from the rink with a match penalty, and missed the end of the game and the post-match celebrations.
After the handshake, the referees were thanked and given beer, the scorekeepers were thanked and given chocolates and wine (unfortunately a puck shortly afterwards reduced one of the bottles of wine to rubbish), and the Phantoms were awarded the DIHL trophy for winning the competition.
Well done to all the teams, and all the players who managed not to get sent off, and we’ll be back next year with more DIHL fun.
November 1, 2006 at 7:37 pm #1577JackMemberA note on last nights B grade Final.
Just to make it clear at the start, I do think John McGlashan has a good team, I mean they have played and practiced together for a lot more then most of the teams in the DIHL B grade, thus they are in essence a very good team.
However, I was more then dissapointed in the way they choose to play the game last night.
The amount racial abuse hurled from the bench by players was totally unacceptible, the fact that there was a teacher on their team yet their behaviour is still so bad….. yea….. More then that, even in the game it self, the captains and assistants of my team were constant targets in either bad checks, tripping or hooking.Maybe the standards at McGlashan has changed, cuz when I went there, fair play was certainlly more important the winning by playing like morons.
November 1, 2006 at 8:25 pm #1578KyleMemberI can’t comment on the game as life prevents me from being at the rink on Wednesdays, but I understand that the referees didn’t hear this comment/s, but did make efforts to do what they could.
Player behaviour has become an increasing concern in both grades this DIHL – we’ve had more fights, penalties, abuse hurled at other players and referees this competition than in either of the last two DIHLs. This is a real concern and something we may have to look at in terms of expanding the short code of conduct that we get players to sign when they join up, and working with referees to enforce player behaviour across the board.
As Phil says, it’s not game 7 of the Stanley Cup, and while I’m 100% behind people taking the hockey very seriously, that’s no excuse for some of the stuff that’s been going on.
November 2, 2006 at 2:06 am #1579imported_RyanMemberMore penalties I say!
I thought the refereeing standard was quite good last night though, much improved on previous games this season. But, unfortunately apparently neither Shaun or Phil heard the racial slurs.
I hope if the referees ever do hear something like that, that they come down on the players pretty hard. I’m not sure of the exact penalties for such things but I would guess it’s something like a game misconduct, I could be wrong though and can’t be assed looking it up right now.
November 2, 2006 at 3:19 am #1580ChrisMemberI think they were just a bit embarassed that an asian player could own any three of them on the ice, especially one with hair as dumb as jack’s ” title=”Cool” />
Seriously though, you have to remember Jack that whenever McGlashan boarders got riled they started throwing racial abuse at you – I remember getting hauled into Dunbar’s office for smacking George Matheson for precisely that reason actually…..
The behaviour in general of the McGlashan team last night is below the standard I would expect from Johnnies. Surely we can still technically give them detention, right jack?
November 2, 2006 at 6:48 am #1581jonniesMemberyea sorry on behalf of McGlashan, i didnt realise racial abuse was going on and the guy grabing your stick was stupid, but the reason for any abuse towards the beasts would be because of the crowd as basicaly the entire hostle came to watch, and is most likely the reason for the rough play (checking etc) as with a crowd like that some of the boys probly wanted to please them, but toughen up, jack, its ice hockey! there was no serious roughing just a few good hits here and there which is part of the game its not field hockey! no1 was targeting anyone, just the person with the puck who coincidently ended up ur captains or whatever. However the abuse was prity gay, and our teacher Mr Bradfield did tell us off repeatedly for not playing clean, and yelled at some of our players about it, so dont take it out on the teacher?! Apart from yas being wound up I thought the game was good and fast paced, with some mean saves from your goalie and good “power play on power play” lines when we got penalties etc! pete tells me you play for the As aswell, so you cant complain to much jack. and dont your b team have two games a week, as aposed to our 1 game?
haha but yea hope its all good,
and good 1 about the detention chris??
RobNovember 2, 2006 at 7:05 am #1582imported_RyanMemberWow, the forum really seems to be taking off now that the season is over! Four people online right now and lots of heated debate going on. We should make sure we don’t go offending anyone though, anyone can read this after all.
Ryan,
November 2, 2006 at 7:08 am #1583ChrisMemberWe should all probably just mellow out about it, it’s over now. Full credit to John for trying to keep you young bucks in line. You guys have a really good team, so congratulations on the win are definately in order, but it would’ve been nice to come second to a team who really played hard but fair. ” title=”Cool” />
November 2, 2006 at 7:10 am #1584JackMemberToughen up? You do realise the game was non contact right? Your goalie drop the stick and head butted one of my players that doesn’t even have full gear on? Was that to please the crowd as well? Notice how not one player on my team even made a single counter check? I can tell you its not because we’re not able to, but we’re trying to play by the rules.
But, at the end of the day, you guys won. Hats off to your players that played fairly.
p.s. what does the fact that I play in the As have ne thing to do with this?
November 2, 2006 at 7:27 am #1585jonniesMemberhaha cheers chris.
yes i no it was “non-contact”, but come on its ice hockey! haha the “head butt” was probly a bit too far, our goalie is an idiot! il put him on supper for that if you want? haha.. well talking to some of the players from the other teams who say they like a rough game thought the almighty beasts wouldnt mind a bit of light checking but obviously not! sorry if us 13-18 year olds were to hard on you jack!and no reson for the a grade call, just been talking to pete and didnt understand how you were in both grades in the first place? im not worried just thought id chuck it in there ha sory
November 2, 2006 at 7:31 am #1586JackMemberActually we just didn’t want to hurt you guys with a proper check, didn’t think u wee kids can take it 😆 but oh well, we know better now.
I play in both grades because i can, easy as that.
November 2, 2006 at 7:34 am #1587ChrisMemberPersonally, I was kinda worried I’d step on one of y’all…. oh well, I’m sure some of you guys will have hit puberty by the time we next meet on the ice ” title=”Wink” />
November 2, 2006 at 7:48 am #1588imported_RyanMemberWe were short on players for the A-grade, and Jack was at the top of the B-grade group so got to play both grades.
Plus he’s a team manager so he get’s special treatment ” title=”Smiley” />
So far, myself, Jack, Jason Sedgwick, Nick Reymond and Mark Dudley (goalie) have played in both grades. Antony Blackett played in goal in A-grade and out in B-grade.
