Well maybe I should reply.
No I am not a fan of Racial slurs and do not encourage them. However I didn’t hear them at the game.A couple of our guys went a bit further than I would have liked. My words at the time were “we have the game guys, leave the Beasts to the nonsense”.
Jack, I find your views at best one eyed. I assume that is the style you are aiming for. Why is it the Beasts have trouble with other teams? This is a question for you and your team to answer. Raving at us when you invited, by your own play, the response you got seems a bit lame.I am proud of my guys. No they are not perfect. [Hang even I have my faults] They have been a pleasure to play with.
They work well as a team and I have enjoyed being part of it.
Let go Jack.
Time to move on.November 2, 2006 at 9:07 am #1590ChrisMemberI’ll ignore the implication that the Beasts in any way incite an unfriendly atmosphere or unsportsmanlike conduct, or that our team has or creates problems with other teams (Perhaps you’re referring to the incident where our team Captain was assaulted by a teacher from an opposing team? Or perhaps you mean the manner in which some of our players have been the victims of theft? Both occurrances, I hope you will note, are criminal offences).
I feel obliged, however, to point out that the only abuse I or Jack have ever received (to the best of my knowledge) was at highschool, from students in our age group down to those who are currently in the senior section of the school, and last night. In fact, come to think of it, I personally have seen more personal abuse from students of McGlashan than any other group of that age. Go figure. I’m not talking crap here, because I really would know, having been a student at McGlashan for seven years. Don’t be surprised that now that we’re out of uniform we’re no longer cowed into holding our peace. I’m not sure, John, that you’d be entirely pleased with the opinion that many former students of other dunedin schools have about particular groups of former, and current, McGlashan pupils.
On that basis I think “they are not perfect” might be something of an understatement. A number of other people who are, perhaps, more objective than any of us who have commented here, have intimated to me that Jack’s views are not at all “one eyed”.
However, as I have said before, we should all let sleeping dogs lie. McGlashan has had an excellent season, and as I have said on a number of occaisions, are an excellent team and deserve congratulations.
In addition, I have the utmost respect and admiration for you John, both personally and as one of the best teachers I’ve encountered. The speed and fitness of your players was impressive, their teamwork was spot on, and their individual skills with stick and puck were obvious to everyone there. Your team won, and that’s the final word.
I’m sure it will look [i:k37gzhjc]great[/i:k37gzhjc] in the newsletter.
November 2, 2006 at 9:16 am #1591hanffyMemberjack, you make your team seem like that they are perfect when in fact it was your players that started playing rough out of frustration, we were just better at it than you…
you can’t really expect to take all the contact out of hockey, the games too fast. if you want to complain about contact in a sport you should be playing soccer, not ice hockey. (apologies to any soccer players/fans)
oh and BTW Jack abusing our players and our school just makes you seem like a sore loser.November 2, 2006 at 9:26 am #1592ChrisMember"hanffy":ky4a0b2j wrote:jack, you make your team seem like that they are perfect when in fact it was your players that started playing rough out of frustration, we were just better at it than you…

If you read my post above, you’ll see that we know perfectly well what goes on at McGlashan, sunshine. Isn’t it past your bedtime?
November 2, 2006 at 9:44 am #1593hanffyMemberlol, the fact that the only replies you guys have made to our posts have been treating us like kids suggests that you have no valid response to our comments regarding you publicly dishonouring our school.
We play hockey for the same reason as everyone else, to have fun.Sure, we like to win, but who doesnt.November 2, 2006 at 9:48 am #1594imported_RyanMemberSounds like you’re all taking this too seriously.
How ’bout we end this.Ryan,
PS: welcome to the forum Hanffy
November 2, 2006 at 9:49 am #1595ChrisMemberYep, I’ve said my piece Ryan. If John has any further comments to make he has my number.

And Ryan’s right. You all played a game of hockey on Wednesday. Well done etc, congratulations to Johnnies, hard luck to Beasts. It’s Thursday now, time for everyone to move on.
November 2, 2006 at 10:41 am #1598DwayneMemberAlright i haven’t been around the ice hockey scene lately but got wind of what happened on wednesday and the fallout, so when i here that johnies, the boys and the school, and my mate (george) being badmouthed it got to me enough to jump in. First of all there is no way you can complain about fair play jack, i didn’t see the game so wil not make a judgement on the referees but the amount of penalties that were dished out shows that the rules did their job and kept the game fair. That is what rules are for, to punish offendors thus with capable refs there can be no unfair play.
Secondly don’t talk about school changing, remember i was there and by the sounds of thing nothin has changed and i was beaming when told how the boys took it out in a real dog fight. i was a part of building ice hockey at johnies and thats the way we tried to play, not fancy but tough. I know you do alot of good work for ice hockey now but at school you were not apart of it so leave that out, if you were you would be plying for them like i did in winter. By bringing up the fair play aspect of johnies it kills an attitude i was part of getting rid of, we went from perrenial losers in most sports to top dogs in all bar rugby and i am proud to say i was a part of these teams who got away from ‘fair’ play (in other words showing up and trying) to demanding victories and succes, it is a testament to the school these boys and especially Mr Bradfield that they carry it on. How about as an important figure in Dunedin Ice Hockey you encourage the schools rather than stickin to a tight nit crew which encourages teams like johnies to have a crack at ya. Now that i’ve vented i just wanna say congrats boys, havin them moan makes victory all the sweeter and hopefully i might beable to play with some of ya’s in autumn.Cheers Dwayne Cleugh
November 2, 2006 at 5:17 pm #1599JackMemberOk, so it seems not only was I the target in the game, i have also become the target in the forum ” title=”Tongue” />
Well Dwayne, funny thing is, our 1st XI soccer team seemd to did pretty well even with the fair play thing, i kinda remmeber we won all our local games and went to the nationals…. but maybe my memories a bit fuzzy.
Mr. Bradfield, when you say, why does the beasts have problems with other teams, do you mean Kings? Cuz i sure find it hard to remmeber when we had troubles with any other teams…. and if so, I would suggest please getting all the facts right before accusing me. You know me personally b4 i left jonnies, or would you really take the words of a school that had a student teacher that came out and punched me at the end of the game?
I’m very proud at how far the hockey team has come at McGlashan, but almost all of you know how little tolerance i have in people that are racist. I enjoy a fast paced and well played game, but enduring personal slandering is not part of it.
My team is not perfect and it has its shair of hot head, and I can honestly say that i did my best to keep them from causing trouble in a game that invited it. I’m not perfect either, i also can get caught up in the heat of the moment, but I’m learning and trying to improve.
But to be honest, at the end of the day, even if none of this nonesense had occured, I believe you guys would have still won the game. You guys have fast skaters, strong back lines and a decent shot spread accross the team. Although i wasn’t involved in the hockey scene when i was at school Dwayne, trust me, I know they have come a long way.
Congratulations McGlashan, DIHL B-grade Champions of 2006 ” title=”Smiley” />
November 2, 2006 at 9:38 pm #1600jonniesMemberhaha from what ive heard sounds like jack and chris gota bit of shit when they were at johnies. gutted, obviously few old high school memories came back to haunt them on wed night.
quote:
Actually we just didn’t want to hurt you guys with a proper check, didn’t think u wee kids can take it but oh well, we know better now.you didnt want to hurt us with real checking? thats the stupidest thing iv ever heardcoming from someone that was about 3 or 4 forms above me at school! any normal old boys would have taken us “little kids” out after we put the first check in! its people like jack and chris that give our school a bad rep, not abuse and “unfair play”. Dwaynes got it right, an attitude “demanding victories and succes”. Im glad this will be over, look forward to playing you in the future and getting a “proper check” from you jack! Not that it was me playing unfairly, just standing up for my team mates in which majority played a good game to lead us to victory.
cheers,
RobNovember 2, 2006 at 9:42 pm #1601DwayneMemberHey bro, yeah fair enough not really trying to have a go at ya, just when i not even involved yet still get people coming to me with that stuff i feel like i need to say something. As i said i wasn’t there but if there were racist comments that as low as it gets, i pretty bad for being dirty and having a loud mouth but would never go that path. As for the soccer though bro it featured some of the dirtiest players namely jules but chiz and monty weren’t exactly clean either and i can promise you they hate the fair play mentality as much as me and they were undoubtedly the team leaders, plus dont think i’m anti-soccer i actually played for that JMC 1st 11 soccer team once!! Anyway bro sounds like a massive storm over nothing really, just seems good that there some interest over hockey round here and should make for some heated compettion next time around which has to be good for the game. Keep working hard bro but remember sport was invented to win, thats why they keep the score
November 2, 2006 at 11:28 pm #1602JasonMemberI’d just like to jump in here and say that the views of both Jack and Chris don’t reflect those of the entire Beasts team. True it was a rough game, but it was also a fast well played game, and we lost due to playing with the puck in our own end and not putting the shots on johnies net.
Would like to say great job to Phil too, you called a good game, sure there were lots of things you missed, on both sides, but if you called over 30 mins of penalties through the game nobody can say you weren’t doing your job. You got to remember that the refs can only call what they see and they can’t see everything. Thanks for your work through the season Phil, and I’ll be happy to help ref next year if you need the people.
Johnies played a good fast game, and deserved the win. Congrats
Jason
November 7, 2006 at 8:59 pm #1603KyleMemberSome very old picks, just running through them seeing how I went.
Week 5
"Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:[b:3vnp5giz]OBHS vs Kings[/b:3vnp5giz]OBHS scored their first point last week, and a win here would see them in the running for the finals, but Kings suffered hard last week, and will be wanting to come back and win to cement third place. Kyle’s pick: Kings 4-1.[/quote:3vnp5giz]
Kings take it narrowly 6-5 over OBHS, and that knocks OBHS out of the running for the final.
Adam Bodnachuk gets the hat trick for Kings, McCaughan and Muirhead both get doubles for OBHS. Ihaia again does well in goal for OBHS, stopping 20 shots."Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:[b:3vnp5giz]Beasts vs Bullfrogs[/b:3vnp5giz]Beasts have looked the business all DIHL, and the Bullfrogs have gotten better, but not good enough. There’s going to be Bullfrog splattered all over the rink, and I’m picking it’ll go to 8-1 to the Beasties.[/quote:3vnp5giz]
7-1, I was close. Blackett gets a hat trick – he’d have been stoked about that one. Biggs again gets Bullfrog’s solitary goal. Big difference in the goaltenders here helps Beasts out – Dudley runs at 90%, Williams struggles to break 50% saves.
"Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:[b:3vnp5giz]John McGlashan vs Bears[/b:3vnp5giz]Bears will be running scared against Johnnies, and rightly so. MacLean has been in good form this season, piling on a heap of goals, and the Bears just aren’t going to have an answer to the kids from JMs. My pick: 7-0 to JMs.[/quote:3vnp5giz]
Another close one, 7-1 to JMs. McLean and Kliegl pick up two more hat tricks, Larry Wheeler stops a whole heap of shots, but you can’t take 34 shots vs putting 5 on and expect to win.
"Kyle":3vnp5giz wrote:That would see finals qualification, in order, for JMs, Beasts, Kings, and Bullfrogs sneaking in at 4th.[/quote:3vnp5giz]Got that bit right.
