[/quote:3kno7ejh]Not everyone is lucky enough to own their own rink.
July 12, 2009 at 10:51 am #12307thirteenMemberyea we southerners are luckey to have club owned rinks, they should have just moved the game to tekapo, would have worked in everybodys favour
July 12, 2009 at 10:57 am #12308cowgirlMemberUmmm, Queenstown has a privately owned rink!
July 12, 2009 at 11:02 am #12309kelf6966MemberI think it is down to relationship building and allowing the Rink to become involved in the NZIHL, everyone has costs to cover!!
And surely the ice had been booked allowing enough time for the game
Who out of the NZIHL teams own their own rink???

AFAIK the only non-privately owned major ice rinks in the country are Alexandra, Naseby and Dunedin.

July 12, 2009 at 11:20 am #12312kelf6966MemberI also can’t seeing any TV network in NZ allowing more 3 hours to a game of Ice Hockey
Does the game not follow the following scedule:15 minutes for Warm Up
15 minutes for a Team talk or what ever happens in this time
20 minutes for 1st Period
15 minutes for Groom
20 minutes for 2nd Period
15 minutes for Groom
20 minutes for 3rd Period
End of GameThat’s 2 hours, and allowing 1 hour for stoppages should be enough time.
The only hold I have seen is the Refs making calls and having 15 minutes discussing on ice to sort them out! – While noone watch has a clue what is going on!
It’s simple the ref’s call is it, if you argue with a ref in anyother game you are gone
This should speed things up.July 12, 2009 at 12:30 pm #12313vpatrolMemberTv doesn’t need to be there for warm-up or team talk but yeah, networks like the CBC spend about 3 hours with pre-game and game…assuming it doesn’t go into OT.
Your 20 minutes allocated for each period should be closer to 40 mins each with stop clock.
July 12, 2009 at 7:54 pm #12314kelf6966MemberPoint is still the same if you change the math!
July 12, 2009 at 10:11 pm #12315plod16MemberYou’ve gotta have some space for the adverts to run in too!!! Don’t recall any 15 minute breaks this season unless it has been for an injured player.
You obviously don’t watch much soccer/football, I don’t think that there would many players playing the entire game in the British Premier league if they had the same type of rules that hockey has to cover abuse of officials.
July 12, 2009 at 11:20 pm #12316Azzy77ModeratorWe were given 2 hours last year to get the games in on tv last year on channel 9.
And with some slick presenting, and fancy editing we managed it just fine, even when Van Leuween tried to make the game all about him by putting his face into the net and stopping the game for so long they decided to ditch last 3 minutes…..
We had ad breaks between each period. And we had pre game run down, and post game interviews…..So it can be done.
I am pretty sure for the sake of 10-15 minutes of free hockey the public skaters wouldn’t mind waiting while the game finished….
July 12, 2009 at 11:50 pm #12317ActiveMemberIce Sports Dunedin which consists of Ice skating, curling and Ice Skating are the owners of The Dunedin ice rink. The clubs have control over the running of the rink via the ISD board. This setup gives us huge advantages not to mention flexibility when it comes to prioritising ice sports over making money or applying for funding for example. We are also well supported by our City Council who see the benefit of having this facility. I am not sure what the status of Naseby, Gore and Alex is. Christchurch is in the bussiness of making a buck for its owner and I understand that logic given he is about to plough lots of money back into the ice floor and needs a return on his dollar. Christchurch rink has no council backing nor sources of community funding to apply to like Dunedin hence running time in the last period in order to fit in a public session. I presume Auckland is the same.
July 13, 2009 at 12:04 am #12318Chin StrapMemberProfit is name of the game here isnt going to chnge for a long time unless hockey can provide more money than public sessions simple as that
July 13, 2009 at 12:12 am #12319Azzy77ModeratorPerhaps, the rinks need to be involved in a discussion on how to make these profits. Like Kelf said building a relationship with the rink.
Maybe this involves them taking a more proactive role in advertising the game.Or some sort of underwriting by the league so that they won;t lose money in a hockey game over a public session.
The thing the rinks should realise is if there is a good hockey game full to the brim with kiddies etc…. then there will be lots of lil timmys and johhnies turning up next week for skating lessons etc to play like there heros…..
I realise this is easier said then done, but I think there needs to be a think tank looking into how to fill stadiums around country it is better for NZ hockey if all the grounds are full.
