I was just wondering last night if anyone else thought it was weird that in a 2 round draw.
We have the Thunder having played everyone, before the Stampede and the Red Devils have squared off once, or the Swarm have played the Red Devils.
That the Admirals and the Thunder play each other 4 times in a row.
That the “University Town” team does not get a bye in the Uni holidays, and has one home round scheduled during exams, and the another just as the students are trickling back into town.
The Red Devils have used up both their byes before the Thunder or the Admirals(??????) have had any.
I was just wondering that is all…..

Merely asking for peoples thoughts not sniffles
July 9, 2009 at 4:51 am #12515vpatrolMemberhaha. I knew you’d say that!
I think there should be some parity as to when bye’s are and not overload a team but that being said, thunder were loaded early on and devils will be loaded late.
University town shouldn’t really play a part when trying to build a national league. A player commits or he doesn’t commit.
Cheap flights might have also had something to do with schedule but that’s just guessing. Someone made a comment, I think it was plod, saying something about “long grind”. When you play two game in a week in a 16 game season, I still think its a very short season. I’ve never got burnt out by it at least. I don’t think its a big deal with scheduling. I wouldn’t be angry if I had any other teams schedules.
July 9, 2009 at 4:58 am #12516Azzy77ModeratorI knew you would take it as a defense of thunder also. And rereading my post it was probably a valid assumption.
But I think it is unfair that the red devils now have no breaks essentially till the end.
Just the same as i think the Thunder had played one full round plus first two games of second round before getting one break. The Stampede get their home games scheduled on and around the winter festival. So i think taking in local holidays or custom is as valid a reason to schedule as you do as any. I was more referring to the fact that during the periods of break during uni, we are less likely to get fans along to the game, therefore scheduling our byes then can increase our revenue and under the leagues revenue sharing arrangement increase the leagues revenue. The uni crowd is a big part of dunedins market, more so then any other city

July 9, 2009 at 5:36 am #12518vpatrolMemberI’m sure there was a request at some point for Qtown to get games during winterfest. Maybe Dunedin needs to make a similar request or perhaps request to not play during an AB’s match two years running?
July 9, 2009 at 6:09 am #12519imported_RyanMemberAny ides how the schedule is worked out? I’d guess the regions are asked to put forward their preferred dates and then it would be worked out from there, maybe with some consultation.
It would be hard to satisfy everyone of course, but from what you wrote above it does look like there’s a been a couple of scheduling mucks up.
Games should not be scheduled for Otago uni. holidays if possible. Nothing to do with the players, just that the university is a good source of spectators, and from those spectators can lead to new beginner hockey players.
July 10, 2009 at 3:38 am #12520Azzy77ModeratorThis year the AB’s game wasn’t in the same city.
Its a reality of playing a winter sport i guess we will clash with AB’s games.Although I don’t see why the league can’t look at the draw and go oh look AB’s match this weekend lets play the games in the afternoon on that day.
We already play 5.30 games when we are in Auckland.Uni crowd is when Dunedin will fill the stadium doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. So avoiding games in Dunedin during uni break is probably a good thing to do.
July 10, 2009 at 6:30 am #12521KyleMemberI presume start times are set by the rinks. It would be infinitely preferrable for all Saturday games to be earlier – 5pm or before, because they clash with a lot of home ABs tests.
Thunder previously negotiated a home game to be the Cadbury Cup, but Thunder wasn’t able to be part of Cadbury chocolate week this year so that won’t be happening. It’s certainly possible to link games to events though.
July 11, 2009 at 10:02 pm #12522Chin StrapMemberthe duration dates and number of games are set as a remit to the national agm and passed there first. From there the defending champions choose there schedule when there games are and when there weekends off are.
So if you look at theres, they play 2 weekends and have one off. Then every ones else fits in around there and they get what they are dealt as they all lost
There isnt really any consideration for other sporting events, but its upto the individual club once the schedule is set out to apply for date changes your management are involved in this, most that are applied for are declined generally if there outside the remit passed at the agm
game times are totaly set by the individual club, NZIHL has nothing to do with that. And that depends on what the club think they can make out of it as, the club pays a set fee to the NZIHL for every game held, then its upto the club wether they make money or not.

July 12, 2009 at 10:36 pm #12524thirteenMemberi dont think our schedule is too bad, except for the uni holidays thing and thats only 1 weekend. we got it sorted about not having games in the same town at the same time as major rugby matches because that was a joke last year, so we did have some input which resulted in beneficial changes for the draw.
July 12, 2009 at 11:03 pm #12525Azzy77ModeratorFrom what i understand each team pays a set fee to the rink for gatetakings and then anything over and above that is split 50/50 so the more people we put in the ground the better for the league…
It seems kind of silly to make the draw based on last years standings? Won’t that mean the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
Wouldn’t it be fairer for everyone for a fair draw to be set, so everyone is equal at the start of the season. Just every team gets one bye before the League bye. Then every team gets bye in second round. None of this one team gets both byes in first round, one gets both in second round.
If any teams should benefit it should be the weaker ones. A similar scenario to NHL draft where last place team gets first draft pick not first place team.
Just my two cents

In the case of Thunder, the DIHA gets all the gate receipts just like CIHA here. In case of any shortfalls, they are the one who have to front up the difference to the league. Don’t think the rink gets anything unless you have a special arrangement. If I recall, didn’t Neil buy a whole bunch of tickets last year as support?
