Is Thunder really a contender in the NZ ice hockey league?
I think last year they had enough good players to at least do ok in the league but this year it seems they have a wide
variety of skill levels, and some players have only had a few years of hockey experience. Have thunder been benefiting the club? Have they been helping out with other younger teams… improving other players….. not from my knowledge. As far as I am concerned Thunder is the worst thing thats happened to the club this year.June 1, 2009 at 8:01 am #11334vpatrolMemberMighty big words from you banana. Generally a first post is “hi, how are you?”, instead of an attacking post. Since you mention your knowledge, how about telling us your name so we can judge your knowledge? Otherwise you will be lumped in with the know-nothings. My money is on a know nothing. My name is Vince.
June 1, 2009 at 8:20 am #11335imported_RyanMemberWelcome to the forum ” title=”Smiley” /> Who are you?
And in case you didn’t realise, the Thunder aren’t part of the DIHA, they’re part of the SIHL.
Peter Lamb was doing a good job coaching the beginners session last night and I believe Blake Sinclair coaches one of the younger age group teams (Juniors perhaps?).
June 1, 2009 at 11:19 am #11336AnonymousInactiveHey Vince, Ryan.
I have been in Dunedin for quite a while and I really liked Thunder last year. And Ryan… i do realise that Thunder is part of the SIHL, but they still use our ice and affect our club and players. I believe that Pete does not play for Thunder anymore, and even if he did thats two players out of A WHOLE team, thats not that many. I just think Thunder has taken Dunedin players that used to be involved in dihl, coaching etc, to becoming isotated from the rest of the club and players. I do think it is great for the players in Thunder, but what about the ones who are not.June 1, 2009 at 1:34 pm #11337rookie19MemberI can see how it is viewed like that. A lot of people have expressed this opinion to me lately…
Problem is we are all training very hard, and its difficult to find extra time as it is with many of our players in University etc… most people dont have the time with other commitments etc..
Banana_ice, as long as you are helping and coaching etc, you can say what you are saying, however if you are just a player that turns up and plays, then you arent really entitled to make the claims that you are. Reason i say that is that many people who have discussed this topic with me dont actually help with the club in any way, which is a joke.
The reason I personally chose to stop coaching last year was mainly because I was at the rink so much i got so sick of the place and wasnt enjoying playing the game anymore. We need new people helping with coaching and management, and this does not have to come from Thunder. There is so much knowledge spread across the club. Everyone knows the basics of the game. Even if you say you are not a good coach, offer to pick pucks up and help with drills at a midget training (i know some of the parents have been skating less than a year and are awesome out there helping out with pee wees etc!!).
I expressed an idea of having one Thunder player a week at a pee wees training to help and basically just make an appearance, as we did this back home for inline and it was quite a special thing to have the kids practicing with advice from the older guys, the kids really loved it. Just a thought and would not take much to roster one player a week for an hour training..
Anyway just my thoughts, Banana_ice sorry if you are a dedicated parent or coach, my opinions are aimed at those not doing anything telling me how little the Thunder players do for the club, which annoys me.
June 1, 2009 at 2:32 pm #11338battered_and_bruisedMemberFor once I must agree with Siffler here. I do know the commitments for the Thunder as I did trial but was ultimately cut for a guy who never showed up. They have a lot on their plates and a few of them are university students. Another way to look at the Thunder is to benefit the league. The younger players who are going to university would have to either travel to Queenstown to play for the Stampede of have no where to play at all. This team allows those players to play at a high caliber level of hockey without paying loads of travel costs or not playing at all.
Vince, I will also put my money with you on that know-nothing lol.
June 1, 2009 at 10:29 pm #11339Azzy77ModeratorWho put up the stands at the rink?
Thunder, I didn’t see anyone else from the club putting it up?Who has three Dunedin Junior Players on their roster?
Thunder, Whilst not specifically coaching the younger guys as wick says we are giving them a team to aspire too.Has anyone approached Thunder to help coach not that I am aware, and most teams I see have at least 3 coaches on the ice already of dedicated parents and others. 3 coaches is bordering on too many, so I am not entirely sure what thunder players could add.
Which Team competed at every round of SiHL?
The Dunedin Penguins Open grade team, that is made up of a lot of thunder players plus some other good dedicated players that benefitted from playing alongside the thunder in a good competition. As far as I am aware the SNC team disbanded, so maybe some of the other Senior players in the club not in thunder should take a look at themselves before pointing fingers. And Stefan is right a lot of the people going oh look the thunder aren’t helping us, are also not helping the club, they are the guys that show up to training and open sessions and leave.
And Banana Ice you say that you liked Thunder last year, as far as I am aware Thunder did less for the club last year, so I am not entirely sure where you are coming from. Yes you could argue bode coached every other grade, but she was paid to do that. This years thunder coach asked but was turned down, probably fairly as he couldn’t commit as long as the new coach (sorry to her I forgot her name) did. But the offer was on the table
Oh and Ryan Peter Lamb isn’t in the Thunder anymore?Jens is also heavily invovled in High Schools hockey, along with Richard Sykes and Blake does a lot of reffing.
You know what else Thunder does for the club, gets exposure for Ice hockey, poeple come and watch hopefully and go wow that looks like a cool sport (hopefully) and they come along and join beginners or peewees, and the club grows.
The Thunder is the worst thing that happened to the club this year? I highly doubt it, and I am sorry we have given that impression, come talk to us we don’t bite, and I hope to see you at our games, even if it is just to boo us for not coaching every grade when theclub has its own professional coach.

[/quote:1uakhwfq]If you are not in the Thunder, then play hard and try out for the team. Do not punish those who aspire for more. They don’t take your ice. In fact, its not your ice to take. Most of those players achieved exactly what was hoped for by the DIHA; improvement and advancement. They’ve come up through the ranks. The 5+ juniors on the team would stagnate in the DIHL if that was their only competition. The SIHL offers more competition however no structured training.
Without Thunder, every region in NZ would progress well past Dunedin. Dunedin kids would still flounder well into the future and with nothing to shoot for, and they would eventually quit after a year or two. So for those who care about hockey and don’t look at it in a short sighted manner, realize Thunder are one of the best things to happen to Dunedin.
June 1, 2009 at 11:34 pm #11341battered_and_bruisedMemberI would also like to add that if the SIHL did not accept the bid to put to the NZIHL for Dunedin, then Dunedin would have lost a lot of their quality players to other sports and most likely the club would not be as strong as it is now. If anything, the Thunder have done nothing but make the DIHA a stronger association when it comes to ice hockey in NZ.
June 1, 2009 at 11:35 pm #11342battered_and_bruisedMemberOh and might I ask, could this be another “Guest” character in the making? Could be, maybe. Who really knows?

June 2, 2009 at 12:05 am #11344AnonymousInactiveWell its great to see how much you guys are doing, but i agree with Stefan, why not have one player a week from Thunder just help out at Peewee practice, the kids would love it.
I would very much like to play for Thunder or even just parctice with them, I think I am good enough.
You are right Thunder is a great thing for the club, I am pleased to be informed by all of you.
Thanks for proving me wrong. I actually think Thunder will do well this year because i can see how much support they have and it seems like
the new coach is great.June 2, 2009 at 12:30 am #11345vpatrolMember"Banana_ice":39j2afkc wrote:Well its great to see how much you guys are doing, but i agree with Stefan, why not have one player a week from Thunder just help out at Peewee practice, the kids would love it.

[/quote:39j2afkc]What each player chooses to do is up to him. Throwing around ideas about what these players should do with their time is wrong. Don’t forget that they are already committing a large amount of time to the team and probably have responsibilities outside of hockey. If individuals turn up to help out peewees, great. If they don’t, nothing negative should be said. Otherwise we can start pointing fingers at every parent who hasn’t taken a coaching course or trains and vounteers their time as a referee.
Glad you see things different banana but maybe we should ask you whether you coach a team or ref or volunteer your time to hockey? There was a coaching course recently in dunedin. Did you attend?
